Unemployment Benefits for Medical Reasoning

Does anyone have any experience claiming unemployment benefits where you left your employer to take care of a family member for medical reasons?

Specifically what you needed to provide. Of course it is on a case-to-case basis. I'm looking for generalities or basic requirements, if there are any. Online information and in-office case workers are, of course, vague.

Do you qualify for FMLA? I had surgery last year, and that's how I was paid.

if you left, I’m not sure you can get unemployment. when I was laid off, it was ID, proof of them laying you off and reason paper, proof you’re not working, apply for jobs and file UI claim with company and dates

The website says if you voluntarily leave for medial reasons you can apply but I just am not certain to what extent.

For context, I would be leaving on my own terms. I had a conversation with my employer to see if they could accommodate my child's health risks and they cannot. So I went to their Primary Care Physician and they said my child is too young to be diagnosed but they wrote me a letter stating that the condition they believe it to be will continually and greatly affect him.

My plan is to continue to find work, preferably something at home or that can accommodate his health. I'd ideally like to be able to claim unemployment until I can find something because in the meantime, I still need to take care of him but I'm simultaneously missing work and pay and it becomes a downward spiral. If that makes sense.

I’d get a copy of emails to the employer, the diagnosis, and they generally ask you to look in the same field but you can explain why you can’t. first, apply for food stamps and do tanf (if you’re in the US) then unemployment and you’ll get a tanf payment once that’s submitted

Yes, my son had a mental health crisis after I had exhausted my FMLA and they denied my claim.

I went ahead and applied for FMLA today. Neither my HR department nor my supervisor made any mention of this option so thank you all for recommending it. I will start with this route and go from there.
