It's always crazy hearing my dad talk about st Helen's before the eruption. Spirit was like the place his parents took them to for vacations and he has so many fond memories.

That whole area was so beautiful back before the eruption. Hard to believe it's over forty years now. Somewhere under all that mud is Harry Truman.

P.S. I remember the fateful morning when the shockwave of the eruption hit my house, 150 miles away. I thought someone was dynamiting stumps at a nearby farm. Windows rattling and walls shaking. Then the chaos from the cursed ash fall. 😬

That could have been me and my sister! Spirit Lake was a great place to visit in the summers, but it often got thunderstorms in the afternoon.

Always a trip to see Spirit Lake before the eruption…. There are a ton of family photos out there of summer vacations and YMCA camp meehan days etc

We went up to Council Crest in Portland to watch the plume and then left town for the coast to escape the ash.

I was swimming on the Columbia River on the Washington side for the second eruption and saw the plume.

When I was a kid my mom and dad and I would spend a week every summer fishing and staying in the cabins. Harry Truman taught me how to use a canoe much to my mother's chagrin. What great memories

Actually, he'd made up his mind to leave, but left it too long. (Family friend worked in the Forest Service up there and talked to him often.)

Do you know why he and his brother first moved up there? They were running moonshine down into Portland! And had their still up there. The guy was more of a character than he liked to admit!
