i wish residents of western washington could really care about the importance of this . The local tv stations need to get their environmental reports up in the air and validate the glacier's non existence. I wish I could get my next door neighbor to understand that it's not important for him to wash their 4 cars every weekend. But sadly we will continue to wash off sidewalks, let the water run while brushing our teeth and water super green grass in the summer.

Individual actions are not particularly impactful against this type of environmental issue. Corporations and lobbyists have spent the past 50+ years systematically dismantling environmental protections including their fight against increasing miles per gallon for new vehicles and approving new oil drilling pipelines.

The best you can do is vote for environmentally progressive candidates and advocate for environmentally sustainable policies, but we’re rapidly reaching the point of no return, and it has nothing to do with car washing or teeth brushing.

My comments about individual actions just refer to the wasteful use of water as a whole, and that maybe, someone seeing a glacier in western washington would inspire better water management practices. I can tell you with 100% certainty, water conservation in car washing and teeth brushing are just as important as global leaders flying every year to COP27 just to tell the world policies aren't working. 27 times so far . Also poor water management practices lead to abuse and over use of aquifers, many people don't know or care. The city of spokane sits on a aquifer that originates in Montana. The town I live in obtains it's water from 5 different wells with help from the city of tacoma. Whats one of the major fund raisers in the summer? Car washes. Usually in a parking lot. Voting progressively won't change how water is managed. You think getting the population to wear masks was a challenge? Wait until cities begin to hire water officers to patrol neighborhoods.

Are you saying that using water causes glacial melt?

i believe they're highlighting the importance of preserving freshwater reserves in the area, as this won't be the first glacier to go.

No but using water mean there is less water in the rivers for the salmon to swim upstream in the fall.

And glaciers provide fresh water for various cities in Washington. Without them, no summer fresh water.

What a stupid headline. All glaciers melt, all the time. It's what they do. Why wouldn't they have said "melts away" or "disappears" or something.

Many glaciers have some portion that stays even through the driest and hottest period of summer. Mount Everest is never missing snow at the top, and Mount Rainier always has snow too but that might be changing. This is a real concern because most water in Washington during the summer comes from the glaciers melting. If they start to run out, the lack of rain will also be a lack of rivers.

Well of course. I didn't mean to imply otherwise. From reading the headline you'd have no idea the the entire glacier is gone. Of course it's a major concern. My comment was aimed at the journalism, not questioning climate change.

I thought it was pretty clear that the glacier melted away considering that the alternative would not have been worth writing about.

And I didn't.

I mean, even you use "melted away" yourself to be clear.
