As someone who lives here, a good rule of thumb is to avoid the downtown areas as much as possible, along with staying away from the streets that are named after trees, because those also are some of the worst areas of Waterbury as well. I’d also take the time to educate yourself with the bus schedules& the times/ hours it operates (weekday schedule vs. weekend schedule), in addition to also knowing that being a big city, there are also plenty of other transportation options, such as using Uber/Lyft. PS: the better areas of Waterbury are typically around the west side, which includes bunker hill/HomePod/the W. Main St. area/the West End, in addition to some areas of the East End as well, which are similar to some of the suburbs of other major cities. There are a lot of good options for food plus a lot of places deliver, but obviously, it’s always good to inquire which ones do you versus which ones don’t. I also want to say that there are a lot of outstanding pizza restaurants here, superb Chinese takeout places, Frankie’s family restaurant/ Blackies hot dog stand, both near the East End areas, in addition to the other outdoor Frankies establishment that’s pretty close/ near the west side area, too. As a lifelong resident, I know the city like the back of my hand and if you need more specific information or links/suggestions for anything, don’t hesitate to respond to this or send me a PM/DM and I could respond there, if necessary/ needed.

For the most part, Waterbury is not that dangerous if you mind your own business and exercise common sense safety stuff. I’ve never had much issue beyond the occasional creep- just don’t get into it with strangers.

Im assuming you're working at one of the hospitals for a year contract. If you find a three family rental in the upper west main area or lowered bunker hill there won't be much trouble, just stay out of downtown and even then people won't bother you, theres just more bullshit. You don't want to be biking across the city to work though, try to stay as close as possible. It's a very hilly city.

People love to shit on Waterbury but it's not that bad, I wouldn't worry too much. Where are you working? For walking/biking, where you work is going to play more into where you wanna live than anything else.

Not up too code, town shut it down and court battle last longer than the owner lived. Then I heard something about his daughter trying to complete it as his legacy and the town shut it down again. Entire property is wetlands and won't support a inhabitantable structure.

After her husband died, the building stopped. That was a long time ago, so I doubt there's plans to continue.

I remember when that was initially being built about 20 years ago. Not sure why they stopped construction. It was pretty cool looking

Amen to that. I left a comprehensive message above, but simply put, that’s great advice on your part. PS: to be slightly more specific, I’d say that the downtown areas in addition to ANY/ ALL street named after trees are typically where so much craziness happens and any/ every person would be wise to avoid those areas! The best areas of the city for most part that I’m sure you’re very aware of/ also familiar with are: the West End and the East End but also, it’s usually smart to avoid much of the North End hat fairly close to downtown along with the projects but it gets better as one gets closer to Wolcott/ and I’d also mention to them to generally avoid the South End!
