It's one of my favorite buildings in Worcester because it highlights exactly why this city died in the first place.
Let's tear down all the old brick of main street and replace it with parking lots and toss up the most bland, boring, beige and black, no windows or defining feature, just an ugly ass chunk of building smack dab in the center of downtown. With a massive parking lot to make sure it wastes as much space as possible.
This is probably correct.
If it’s the building I’m thinking of, it’s the Crown Castle Fiber’s colo data center at 474 Main st.
I mean correct but shouldn't that make it one of your least favorite buildings
It's a good reminder.
it's a "NOC"; network operations center. it's where all the telephone lines go and the monkeys route the calls through the switchboards.
I would bet it’s a data center and doesn’t have windows as it’s most likely temperature controlled.
This is correct, if you see any building with no windows and a telecom name on the side, this is what it is.
It looks very easy to secure from the outside. Don’t mind me I just watched The Belko Experiment 😬
This is the correct answer^. To OP if you are looking to work there, I looked on Crown Castle job listings, nothing for Worcester, so either not looking for NOC operators or they staff the NOC through a MSP, or retained old ATT staff
I was in this building 2 weeks ago. It's empty. They use half a floor for the remainder of the active equipment. It's a shell of empty rooms and only the maintenance Staff work in it.
At&t won't give up their prime spot. The crown castle colo is down the street 1/4 of the size and has more equipment.
And per the Crown Castle wiki page, they lease these data centers from ATT for $1900/month each location
My mom worked there for like 20 years, but it’s been “vacant” for like 25. Def probably some NSA shit going on in there tho. NSA had a secret at&t front in New York for YEARS
The Lightower Folks you say, the ones that were bought out? Heard they had an intensive fiber network throughout the city, hopefully it gets put to good use besides downtown.
It's a magnificent art deco gem❤️
That building is mostly vacant. All their switchgear takes up very little space compared to what it must have been in the Long Lines heyday.
They have some suites in there. An employer I had ages ago had an 15454 in there because we picked up an OC-12 there. One rack in a room that easily could have held a dozen.
It’s not marketed or advertised, obviously. The CC Pop at 474 is really all there is in the city. There are a few carriers there, but all the serious stuff is in Markley Boston.
Crown Castle has all of what was considered Lightower, Sidera, and N-Star in the area. They are one of the few carriers you can get dark fiber from.
Two different buildings. You have the correct address for Crown Castle which is across from City Hall. OP is talking about the gargantuan eyesore at approximately 175 Main across from Armsby Abbey.
It’s a front for the headquarters of Dr Evil
It does have that 1960s spy movie vibe doesn't it? If it ever came on the market what could it be repurposed as?
That’s in NYC
AT&T has data centers in "abandoned" buildings across the country that store the majority of their regional telecommunications. They do this to hide in plain sight for easy access and maintenance, but it's not the safest choice...
I was living in Nashville when some anti-vaxxer blew up a similar building in downtown on Christmas morning because of the 5G conspiracy. We lost telecommunications and internet for nearly two weeks.
Here's the article if you want to know more..
Could be a secret prison.
