I live in Main South, a couple nights ago I noticed a Rottweiler outside of the redemption center on the corner of Cambridge and Richards. I went to go check it out and the dog is being left there overnight, on the side of the building. It’s shelter consists of pallets and some cardboard.

Some neighborhood kids I talked to said they brought it food and water, I gave it some food and it seemed super hungry. This all was on Thursday night, I called the police because I didn’t know what else to do, they said they’d check it out. The dog was still outside last night in the rain.

What else can I do to help this dog? I’m tempted to just go take it myself and bring it somewhere, I also don’t want it to just be taken to a rescue where it has a risk of being put down, for being a “dangerous breed”

So I'm outside. I initially didn't see the dog and went in. I asked the owner if they had a dog, and the owner asked why. I asked if they were leaving the dog outside over night. He stated he had not. I explained multiple neighbors are concerned about the dog and have seen it outside in the rain without food. He admitted he left it out one night with food. I told him a neighbor had already spoken with the police and his community was keeping track of if he is caring for the dog and that leaving it outside overnight was unacceptable and his neighbors would be monitoring. I left before I got heated. The dog was outside next to the building when I went out and it looked ok. They quickly opened the side door and let the dog in. It did look chonky. The area is surrounded by chain link fence with cameras.

I'll swing back tonight and see if they left it out. I get real upset about shit like this. Thanks for looking out for the pupper.

You are amazing! I never know how to approach situations like these, but you seem to have done it with a level head, I’m glad you kept your cool.

It’s funny he says that it was only one night, I have a video of it from Thursday night, around 10 PM I even filmed the “shelter” they had made for him. I’m going to start taking a video every night. I live within earshot of the building and can confirm it was for sure out there at 12:00 AM this morning, and I woke up and saw it again at 7:00 AM, prior to them opening.

Another sad part of it, is during the week the property adjacent is an active construction site. The dog is sometimes 5-10 feet away from heavy machinery, and just your average loud construction noises. It’s gotta be terrifying for the poor thing. The group of kids I spoke to on Thursday told me they first noticed the dog about a month ago, but never had seen it outside over night.

I was direct to get my point across but I didn't want to escalate and have him take it out on the dog. Who knows of that's a possibility. If they do in fact keep it out, contacting animal control during business hours will be the best step. Worcester police are not the greatest on following up, and the dog is very clearly on private property and not accessible. It IS a business, so my hope is that my statements will instigate enough paranoia that they will take it seriously.

I would check on him now and again. Good for you for checking on him! I don't trust people that lie about stuff with their animals.

Call the worcester animal rescue league. They should be able to give you an idea of what to do. You might be able to do more than police since you've seen it,

Can you take it to a shelter? The people who own that dog don't want if they've left it outside for days with cardboard. They've abandoned the dog to fend for himself.
