I love the food at Sol, but was just in Brooklyn for the weekend and was reminded of what excellent Mexican food is like. You know, like the chips they make themselves from homemade corn tortillas and you can't get the salt out of your mouth or the oil off your fingers for days? Any suggestions?

Dude I knew from San Antonio (that's Tacoland) said Caliente was the best in the area, I trust him on that.
I was born in California so I have this innate yearning for the mexican flavor profile of yore I experienced as a kid. Most of the examples in this thread are fine, but they are tex-mex. Taco Cailente will have huitlacoche and nopales on the menu if they're able to get them. They'll also have good soups (hominy or tripe) on weekends. These aren't common ingredients in mexican restaurants outside the southwest/west.
The few times I tried them I did not love the meat preparations--they tasted like they were all cooked in the AM then sat in a warming pan full of juices all day. Weren't my favorite but maybe I'll have to try again. I prefer Pepe's and El Patron for authentic tacos but wish they did their own tortillas. Haven't really found a perfect taco spot around here. I was admittedly spoiled by San Diego tacos for 6 years so I will probably never be fully satisfied.
Did you try the birria taco? I've never felt they tasted like they were overly stewed. But I've always hit them in the early afternoon. They have specials like taco pirata and weekend soup options.
I'm not a huge fan of the birria thing. I like the classics (carne asada/carnitas/al pastor) and Caliente fell flat on those when I tried them. Been a while though.
You are 100% correct. Birra tacos aren't noticibly different in taste profiles. People don't order them enough due to expense or messiness or extra cost and then the meat sits around and there's nothing I've really tasted which made any big impact that made them better IMHO.

The sopping wet/cheesy/consomme thing really doesn't do it for me. Feels like hazy IPAs; a consumable fad that needs to go away. Maybe I'm just a crotchety 35 year old.
Wish there was a place in town that did proper al pastor. Would be all over that.
I’m no expert in authentic Mexican food, but I’m a big fan of Pepe’s in tatnuck square.
The Taco Spot is absolutely the best tacos/burritos in the city. Casa Vallarta is where I would go if I wanted a Mexican plate like steak or fajitas.

Pepes Taqueria is pretty good. Chips are freshly made.

As a Mexican living in Worcester and always around authentic food there’s only a few spot around here. Taco caliente, Sol de Mexico, and taqueria del Pueblo are closest to authentic. A lot of people like The taco spot but I personally don’t.
Casa vallerta is probably the best I've had locally
Taquiera del Pueblo on highland . Their Tortas are to die for.
The Brick in Sterling. The best Mexican food I have ever had.

EVERYBODY says The Brick in Sterling is the place, but I've never been.
The only explanation I can think of for this is these people have never had authentic Mexican food before.
It's basically a much smaller scale Margaritas.
I mean the food is fine. I just would not slap the authentic tag on it.

Not in Worcester, but Taqueria El Amigo 3 in Clinton. People are saying Pepe's but I've found them to be very inconsistent.

Hola restaurant in southborough. Don’t know if that’s too far. Great drinks, chips are fresh, tacos were awesome. I’m from Texas., closest thing I’ve had comparable to back home.
Way too expensive for what you get. Nice people, decent food but I’m not paying $16 for four tacos.

Not in Worcester but The Brick in Sterling is awesome
The Brick in Sterling is really good but they don’t have homemade chips. El Patron in Worcester is pretty good.

Mexicali is the worst Mexican food in the area. Mexican food that lacks any flavor. Taco Bell is better.
They’re a small chain and have locations in Worcester and Holden as well.
