Credit unions are another great place to get loans.

If you are in a credit union, check with them about getting a car loan. They'll tell you how much they can loan and for how long. If you don't belong to a credit union, maybe check with your bank?
Another idea, if you don't need it right away, check your credit score with one of the big three and make sure that everything they are basing your score on is accurate. Also, look up (google?) and see how long it would take to improve your credit score; I think it depends on what financial sin you have committed.

I bought a 2008 Civic for $2,000 the other day from a private seller off of Facebook Marketplace. (High millage and cosmetic damage, but it runs and drives). Definitely checkout Marketplace, Craigslist, etc. There are definitely some cheap options. When I'm looking at buying something off of there I make a habit of checking for five minutes every day in case something really good comes up.

Go and set up a AAA account, get preapproved for a loan, THEN go car shopping. NEVER get financing through the dealer
