Hello Folks,

Request

  • Can folks recommend plumbers /HVAC folks that are good at replacing -
    • Gas furnace

+

  • Hot water tank

Context

  • Furnace is 30 Years old and has on-going maintenance issues
  • Furnace has developed a water leak because of valve issue
  • Looking for low to no maintenance solutions

Leaning towards

  • Replace gas furnace first and bear that cost

vs.

  • Replace gas furnace + get Heat pumps and bear twice the cost

This is based on the point of - Heat pumps can be retroactively added in the future

Landry Mechanical replaced my oil boiler and electric water heater to natural gas boiler and electric. Very professional and cost was fair based on quotes I received. Good luck

Thank you!

Did they figure out the brand and type of furnace and water heater to install on their own?

OR

Did you have to select and do that research?

They did everything. I think it's the owner will come out and measure your radiators and determine the prior size boiler for your need. They even replaced all the vent valves on my steam system, runs super quiet now. Amazed me cause I thought Steam was loud.

Dan Lavoie of Lavoie Heating Service did an awesome job when we converted from oil to natural gas. Be sure to check MassSave for rebate opportunities and their zero interest loan program for some upgrades.

Mass save will be something for you to look into.

But also McDonald Plumbing and HVAC from Auburn. Recommend staying away from Nicholson. They are the absolute worst.

After moving to Mass 12 years ago I’ve learned that it’s better to just do it yourself even if it means spending six months getting a certificate

I’m a master plumber. You can’t get a certificate to work on gas in six months. If you have some secret way of pulling a gas permit and getting a inspection please contact plumbers local 4 because there are a ton of apprentices who would love to know your secret!

I won't get near the gas stove let alone touching a wire or a copper pipe :(

I fully understand - One wrong step and all hell could break loose

Ron-Ruger -- In your recommendation, what type of furnace, boiler i should get?

When I did residential work I swore by Buderus for boilers supplying baseboard or a hydro air system. If you are replacing a hot air furnace there are tons that your installer can recommend, the codes have dramatically changed in the years over venting. You may have to direct vent out a wall, or if you were venting out the chimney before that, it may not work with new equipment. The codes changed because the exhaust from the equipment was deteriorating the clay liners in chimneys and destroying them, now chimneys have to be lined and inspected. Bafaro has been around forever. Pinnacle HVAC does great work!! I no longer do anything residential. I hope this helps

Yes, we have this. The vent is thru the wall and gets smoke out of the house.
The smoke is not out thru the chimney

Thank you for the recommendation !

In terms of cost - How much should i be looking to pay approximately?

I really wish I could give you an idea of the cost but I have not priced things out in a long time! I do know that materials have almost tripled since the pandemic, like copper fittings, valve’s, and even solder is $40 per roll. Whatever you do, don’t go with the low bidder and if possible try to get a reference! I just went through hell with a roofer that was highly recommended from friends and had great references! The price will probably shock you Best of luck to you
