Anyone know anyone who does that kind of work reliably and reasonably? Don't want to use the oil company. They tend to be overpriced.

We just had ours done last week. $3,500. I’d recommend my oil Company but they aren’t taking new customers.
I called around after they gave me a price, because I initially felt it was high. It seems the going rate is between $3,800 and $4,200 when using a company.
Independent plumbers will be less, but good luck getting a tank on your own, and you’d have to pull permits. Also not sure how much disposal fees will be.

spot on. in addition to the health and environmental hazards involved with oil-tank removal and disposal, there's the other issues of sourcing and permitting. there are good reasons why this is not cheap to do and why it's best to not just hire some plumber you found on Angie's List.

I just had my own replaced a month ago and it was $4200 for a double wall Roth tank. All permits, taxes, and disposal etc included.
They told me it would be $3900 for a direct replacement, single wall steel tank. For an additional 300 it was a no brainer to get the better one with a longer warranty. It also takes up less floor space because it's more of a vertical rectangle than the old style.
I used CKSmith and they chose to sub it out because either they didn't have a crew that could do it soon enough, or that's just how they do it.
The old tank was leaking so I needed it done quickly.

Did you finance it with them?

No, I paid on credit card for the points and then paid the card from my checking and used some of my home equity line to avoid the credit card interest rates.

In 2020 I paid $3,500 for a Roth tank. It would've been $3,200 for a regular tank. For the peace of mind it's worth paying only a bit extra for a Roth time.

It’s been a few years but we used Tanks a Lot before and I recall them being pretty reasonable. https://tanksalotremoval.com/tanks/
