When casinos were legalized, they initially pitched a slot parlor for Worcester. It got bigger turnout than any city council meeting I've ever seen, filling the overflow room at the other end of the floor. It was almost entirely people against the move. I wouldn't foresee this going down without massive public outcry.

When has public outcry ever been a metric the City listens to?

CatumEntanglement t1_ixeoqcu wrote

They also listened when people were against the renaming of Plantation street. If there are enough people against something that it causes people to speak out, then reps do listen to their constituents.

Do you remember that video store in the food court. The site it was at has been abandoned since before the McDonalds left.

That was a weiiiiiird store. Like no one knew it was there haha. Wasn’t it a computer gaming place at its last breath?

Not sure.

Did you remember Marshall's and an anchor store? I still use a blanket that I bought there.

2

Ok_Fox_1770 t1_ixi9rk5 wrote

Marshall’s was a cool spot, made TJ sweat and try a little more. Then there was the fair… or spags… I dunno it was fun to have variety of places and touch stuff. Avoid that buyers regret when you get duped online. Or “Wished” as we call it in the family. Sick of the same plaza same stores, just change the town name

The airport would’ve been a great spot for a casino. Tons of space, plenty of parking, far from residential areas so it’s not a nuisance and they easily could’ve added a horse/dog or NASCAR style race track

1

Ok_Fox_1770 t1_ixhk8x1 wrote

Ah yes the airport. Put in a motorized path down to hot dog Annie’s! Sky would be a light show nonstop

You're not finding any news on this because this is just a random Facebook post... If you really needed someone to explain this to you I can't imagine how much you're struggling daily. Wishing you all the best.

MTRIFE OP t1_ixe944l wrote

Lol. A condescending comment like this to a random redittor you don't know from a hole in the wall (when, you know, simply scrolling by such an apparently waste of time post like this was totally an option), yet I'm the one struggling lol. Happy Holidays my friend.

1

colb_E t1_ixeazxi wrote

Yeah I guess I can't help myself sometimes. Mostly cuz in an age of misinformation it terrifies me that someone can read a comment like "Casino in Worcester????!!!" coming from a person on Facebook whom they don't know from a hole in the wall and actually think there might be a shred of validity to it.

MTRIFE OP t1_ixedpp6 wrote

Well don't be terrified. When the question comes from someone active in that group with apparent ties to the sheriff's department, which in turn, makes it reasonable to wonder what other contacts they may have (city council, etc.), and isn't just some random 18 year old being a goof, it isn't unreasonable to wonder if there could be some rumblings not yet publicly known.

This being the case, a person could either, ask, answer, speculate, or ignore. All four options cost $0.00.

But now above all, my concern is what happened that led you to this point of expending your own energy to speak so hostile, condescending, and judgmentally to strangers? Do you want to talk about it?

2

colb_E t1_ixenl69 wrote

Eh, I really didn't expend that much energy.Being more active than others in a Facebook group doesn't make you a verified source of information. Sorry for being rude about it, but my hope is that you'll take this experience and apply more common sense when using the Internet in the future.

Also, how can you say I'm hostile when I wished you all the best?

2

rrsafety t1_ixeao7o wrote

News on what? A question online?

3

MTRIFE OP t1_ixecnyq wrote

Well being that the person who made the comment is active in that group and appears to have ties to the sheriff's department (which would mean who knows what connects they may even have to the city council, etc.), there is no reason for me not to consider there could be some rumblings.

That being the case, since I don't know each individual person that peruses this sub, I also don't know if there are is someone that frequents this sub that may have heard or seen something that isn't readily available information as of yet.

New-Vegetable-1274 t1_ixebqu9 wrote

If this is so, they should put it in the downtown area. Anywhere else will impact residential property values negatively. A casino downtown could benefit other businesses or it could mean their end. Casinos generally are self contained, with hotels, restaurants, shopping and entertainment. That could negatively affect other businesses but boost employment by a lot. Then there is the city's cut, this would mean more money for schools, infrastructure and public safety. It's a lot to think about.

2

LegisLAYshun t1_ixff6dg wrote

Worcester cannot host a casino under the current law. The Expanded Gaming Act created three regions, each of which could host one resort casino. Worcester is part of Region A, which already has the Encore. The Act also allowed one slots parlor statewide, which is Plainridge Park.

2

saintsandopossums t1_ixedwv8 wrote

I would tend to doubt it honestly. They tried to put in a slot parlor not too long ago, and there was incredibly strong opposition. Wouldn't be shocked if they tried some sports betting location at some point though. Not sure how the licenses work with the new state law

NovelNo87 t1_ixf0g61 wrote

The last I can remember was years ago when it was proposed and rejected, before Polar park was even decided on. Now with all the other developments going on I highly doubt it’s even a possibility. Besides you can get to at least 5 different casinos in an hour or less from here.

Have you been to MGM Springfield? It's the single most depressing place in the state. Full of gambling addicts losing the paychecks their families need. You walk in the door and within five minutes you've lost the will to live.

2

darksideofthemoon131 t1_ixewm8y wrote

The baseball stadium will likely not bring down property values or increase crime. Casinos typically bring property values down between -2 and -10%. Newer studies (most recently in MA) have shown that casinos can either raise crime rates or decrease them. It's a crap shoot.

I'd rather not take the risk.

For the record, I don't think the stadium will be a long term success. It's a novelty that will wear off soon. I hope they do add concerts and other non- baseball related events there to give non sports fans a reason to go and make the venue more multi-use.

2

Cran125GPS t1_ixe91uy wrote

In what way? I've been to MGM in Springfield and to many games at Polar Park and its a night and day difference in what each has done for the respective cities

OrphanKripler t1_iy5qsft wrote

So far the stadium has shut down many local businesses and congested the city

1

Cran125GPS t1_iy5rev7 wrote

That's just categorically false and not backed by facts. More businesses have opened by far than been closed in that area.

And "congested the city" oh please there's some more traffic around game times in that area, with no impact on the other 98% of the city....
