Ed Hyders and Bahnans are both just a block away from each other on Pleasant St. Both have great food + drink. The freshly made hummus and baba ganoush at Bahnans and their baklava are a staple in my household. I pick up all my specialty wines and beers from Ed Hyders.

This is more Scandinavian as I'm of Swedish heritage, but The Bean Counter on Grove St. has some recipes from the old Crown Bakery (Swedish bakery that closed a few years ago), so they have some options for amazing Swedish baked goods. This time of year they might not have the stock as readily available, as I think all the local Swedes are tapping into their food roots for Xmas, but if you go on their website you can place an order ahead of time for pickup. Highly recommend their cardamom rings with cinnamon, if you're looking to pick up something for a small crowd.

Seconding this for Swedish baked goods - the Princess Torte is amazing but order a week in advance!

The other places mentioned are great. My wife is Korean and gets all of her staples from the ubiquitously named Asian Supermarket on Mill St. I haven’t come across a bigger Asian super market in the area. There are also a few great Indian grocers along rt 9 in Shrewsbury.

One of the few things I miss about Central Mass is all the international grocery stores.

Mekong in main street is good for Vietnamese and Asian specialties, super cheap produce.

Seconding Bahnans, too

Bahnan’s is classic for anything Mediterranean. My family is Greek and we usually get our Easter lambs from there. Kalamos is newer but better focused on imported Greek goods, we go there for snacks, Nescafé, etc. They’re legit and don’t get enough attention, plus the owners are really nice.

Crown butcher off of gold star boulevard is a great Brazilian butcher. They have awesome rib eyes. They also have cases and cases of frozen Brazilian treats to take home. A whole case of pao de Queijo in different flavors and sizes

Yes! Definitely a really great place. I go in here a few times a summer and they’re always super helpful as I stumble around the neat and sausage trying to figure out to buy. I was sad when Crown Bakery closed but I’m glad this place is what moved in.

Yeah that place is outrageously priced. Shop there if you like paying $6 for two potatoes. I want to support local/organic/etc but come on, be reasonable.

Ed Hyder’s and Bahnan’s are fantastic. Ed Hyder’s is higher end. Bahnan’s is very authentic and has great prices. Golemo’s is also great.

I second that, they sell some amazing ready to eat curries and their samosas are prepared daily. So if someone doesn't know, it's inside the Indian market on Rt. 9 backside of Christmas tree shop.

I was living in Boston for a while and had an Indian roommate who would take me to Patel Brothers in Waltham a couple times a month. I've heard good things about the Patel Brothers in Shrewsbury especially to get good prices on spices, but I still haven't been to the Shrewsbury location.

Any recommendations from Patel brothers I haven’t been but live close and like easy and authentic cooking and prepared dishes

Patel is great. And if you can't find it there, there's that India market down by Christmas Tree shops.

I typically go to India Market as it's just a little bit closer to me, but I kinda hate the store layout.

I like Bahnan's for Middle Eastern groceries. Ed Hyder for gourmet with a middle Eastern leaning. Gala for Spanish groceries (incredible selection of dried chilies among other things) and Tom's and Golemos for Polish groceries. You can find both Lithuanian and items from Ukraine at the last two.

  • I forgot that Big Boi is good for Brazilian items. **Forgot Kalamos over on June Street for Greek food and pastries. The owners are super nice

Ed hyders is amazing and Bahnaans. Also, the vietnamese grocer on green street is also great and super inexpensive. Crown meats on goldstar sells fantastic meats (i think they might be brazilian, not sure). Also, birchtree is fantastic for fresh breads.

Patel Brothers in Shrewsbury for Indian

Asian Supermarket is good but the quality of produce has gone down since pre-covid. They also tend to be out of stock on many staples (e.g. Kimchi which is fine because I can make my own but I'm lazy).

Miranda Bread is an excellent Brazilian bakery on Shrewsbury St.

Gerardo's is my favorite Italian bakery. One in Shrewsbury by Trader Joe's / Total Wine and one on Boylston.
