If you're around in the summer you'll want to check out the Worcester World Cup. It's just lovely. There are pick up soccer games around but you kind of just have to find people playing in a park and ask them. I know wpi has some students who regularly get together to play. I saw you ask about beaches; Rhode island beaches are very good. Lots of surfing year round (wet suits are magic). And beaver tail park is really beautiful.
