Officer White sighs "You're confessing to a murder that didn't happen?"

"That hasn't happened, yet," I tell the man.

Officer White rubs the bridge of his nose. "So you're planning a murder then?"

"Heavens no, but last Halloween, Madame Lunaria, a fortune teller from the city's New Year festival, told me three things would happen this year; I would find love, I would adopt, and I'd be the reason for someone's demise." I tell the officer, eyes watering.

"Have any of those even come true? I don't see a ring on that finger." Officer White points out.

"Yes. He's my second cousin, Marcus Love. He did one of those Ancestory tests and found out we're related and live like 20 minutes from one another. No luck on actually finding love, but that's okay. And I did adopt, a stray cat came to me in the middle of the night in March, with a hurt paw and I nursed her to health. That means the only thing left is to kill someone. I don't plan on killing anyone, but everything else came true so surely this will too,"

Officer White rubs his temple. "Any history of mental illness in your family?"

" How dare you!" I say. " I am not crazy, Madame Lunaria is the real deal. I'm asking you to lock me up for a while. Just until New Years to make sure I can't kill anyone."

Officer White shakes his head. " We can't go locking up people just because they ask, and you really don't want to be in prison, kid."

"I'm not asking for maximum security, maybe just one of those fancy white collar prisons? Or a sheriff jailcell? It'll only be for a few months. And cheaper than my apartment. You'll be doing me a favor."

" Absolutely not, now get out of here before I charge you for wasting the department's time. No crime was done, I have no reason to be talking to you." Officer White says.

I try to reason with him but I'm escorted outside.

I wait around outside the department for a few hours, hoping to convince Officer White.

The sun sets and it begins to get cold. I'm shivering and about to give up and try again tomorrow when the doors open and Officer White steps out in his civilian clothes; a worn brown leather jacket and black slacks.

"Officer White, please just hear me out," I say. Officer White sighs, "Kid, I'm off the clock. I'm going home to my wife and kid. You didn't do a crime, you're not going to do the time."

"Fine. Then..." I walk over to a trash can and reach inside. I throw some newspaper and a used coffee cup on the sidewalk. "I'm litering, that's illegal."

"A fine for littering, not jail.time," Officer White says. "Get some help," he begins crossing the street towards his car. I think a moment and find a rock, and throw it. I watch the rock make the arc and smack against Officer White's back. The man stops and turns around, not looking pleased. "Did you throw that?"

I nod and smile "Assaulting an officer is a bigger offense right? I'll be in jail for a bit, maybe even isolated?"

Officer White takes a breath and walks back over. He grabs my collar. "I don't feel like doing paperwork tonight, so you best behave yourself and get checked in to St. Mary's, they have a psychiatric ward."

I frown. "You're not going to arrest me? Come on, fucking pig. Is it because I'm white? Would you have shot me otherwise?" I poke the big man in his soft chest. "Bet a fat ass like you wouldn't be able to catch me even if you did try to arrest me. I ran track in high school." I try to get this man angry enough to book me.

Officer White's chubby face turned red with rage, maybe embarrassment or just the cold air.

"Listen here you little insufferable shit! I'm an officer of the law and you will respect me as such or so help me God I'll-I'll" Officer White clutches his chest, breathing harder than normal.

"You okay man? I was just joking. Just arrest me already."

Officer White gasps for breath and falls forward, nearly crushing me.

"Shit, HELP! Someone help!"

This sounds like a case of a prophecy coming true because you believe it will. I bet if the stupid fortune teller hadn't said anything, everyone woulda been fine. He only even NOTICED the stray cat, I bet, BECAUSE of the 'prophecy'. And finding love? Come on, that's just a coincidence! I bet he'd count it if he found a heart-shaped object somewhere!

The problem with prophecy is that the universe can, very broadly, work in one of two different ways.

The first way almost guarantees that by seeing the future, you will change almost anything that you see, just by virtue of having seen it. Chaos theory assures that even the smallest change in your actions, compared to the future in which you did not see those events, will ripple outwards until nothing is as it would have been.

The other possible version means that once it has been seen, there is no free will for those events. They will happen, no matter what. Because in many ways, they already have. All opportunity to change already occurred, and it was over the moment the future was seen.

While there are absolutely lots of quite interesting uses for the first, the second is, fundamentally, much darker. If you don't act, that lack of action may cause the events. If you do act, your very action may cause the events.

No matter what, you can not alter anything that you have seen.

There are still things that one could do with visions of the future under those conditions, but they would be sharply limited.

It sounds like they are stuck in the second kind. May whatever deities watch over them have mercy on their souls.

Cop rolls his eyes, clearly unamused. "Kid, this is the real world, not some superhero film or 'chosen one' series. Gonna let you go."

"NO!" I shout in response. "Listen, this isn't an ordinary situation. Please, I beg you, just listen."

Cop grunts, annoyed, but nods slowly.

I know words won't convince him. So I have to show him. "Everyone's heard the stories. Demon children born to human parents. My family are very superstitious, so when I went from 'sweet innocent kid' to 'little terror', they took me to see someone."

Cop scoffs at me. "And, what, you're a demon child? Get real."

"I thought the same way, officer" I state. "I can be horrible sometimes, but a demon? Then... something happened..."

Cop raises an eyebrow. I take a deep breath and continue. "Some jerk stole from me while I was out. I ran after him and attempted to corner him. He drew a knife, then suddenly cowered... 'PLEASE! SPARE ME! I'M SORRY! I HAD NO IDEA-' I had to cut him off. Demanded to know what he was talking about. He just pointed at my hands. They were claws. I had CLAWS, sir! And I suddenly realised... I almost killed him, for being a thief... told the guy about me being seen as a child, and how I never believed it... I asked if it was my fate to be a monster, to kill without mercy..." I let my mind take control, and my hands suddenly have claws, not nails.

The officer almost falls backwards off his chair in surprise. "He said yes. So I came here. I don't even care if I LOOK like a demon, but if I can't control myself-" suddenly, I notice that I have the officer, pinned to the wall, by the neck. I fight against myself to let him go.

Another officer enters the room. "We all tried to tell you, sir, that demons are real. Normally they just try to find where hell is, but seems like he's not interested."

I nod. "That's right, I'm not. I just don't wanna hurt anyone."

"Already called the specialists for this." The new officer pulls out a gun. Somehow, I'm repulsed by it. Must be holy in some way. "Just wait."

"I want to ask something..." I begin tearing up. "My parents are good people. Why am I a demon?"

"They'd either be demons themselves or were cursed by a demon. Seems like for your parents, it was the latter."

"That's why they wouldn't have more children..." I mutter to myself, just as a group of people arrive.

Light-infused armour. Holy daggers. Enchanted chains. I gulp. I feel my demon side trying to force its way out, rear its ugly head. I feel the urge, the need, to flee, to run, to get away, however I can.

"SHOOT ME!" I yell at the officer, afraid I can't control it. I feel a sting like nothing I've ever felt before. Then, I black out.

I wake up. I'm in a small room, lying on a soft bed. Looking around, everything is red. I also spot a camera. As I sit up, I look at my hands. They're transformed. I look in a full-length mirror. Some of my body has morphed into being demonic.

The door to my room opens. The person is wearing something on their neck. It feels powerful. "Where am I?"

"In our Demon Containment Facility. Follow me." He attaches a lead of some sort to the chain on my wrists, and gently tugs it. I follow, the sound of metal clinking on the chains of my ankles as well as my wrists. On instinct, I let out a breath of fire. He holds the pendant on his neck up, and it absorbs the fire.

We down down several corridors, before I'm taken to an area with demons in cells. Every single one is chained down, every door is infused with holy magic. I squirm, but there's no running.

I'm put into a cell. I beg them to give me zero chance of escape, I don't trust myself. Once I'm settled in and tightly chained inside the cell my enchanted cuffs, I relax on the bed, relieved and satisfied.

"Such an insult... keeping you caged like an animal..." I look around, and see a demon, on the other side. "I'd free you, but I'm not powerful enough... yet."

"I'm more free in here than as a mindless creature of evil" I spit.

"I'm sure you'll come around." He flicks his wrist. Something appears inside my cell.

I pick it up. "What's this?"

"It'll vibrate when I command it to. When it vibrates, that'll signal your one and only chance to escape." The demon leaves.

Part of me is excited, but the other part is terrified. I don't want to leave... but it may not be my choice...
