Looking to move out in the new year and looking for options. I make decent money, and while I *could* afford $2000+ a month, it's not something I'm willing to do so I can save for the future. Ideally I would want 1400-1800 for a studio or 1b, with access to a metro or metro bus line, though could go up for the perfect place. Pentagon city or Crystal city would be preferable, but not a deal breaker. I know it's probably a long shot, but any suggestions?

If you don’t need an updated kitchen/floors (early 2000 white is ok) then check out 2121 and 2200 Columbia Pike (that’s both their name and address). If you want something a bit more updated check out The Wellington. If you don’t need updated AT ALL you’ll want to look at Dorchester Towers (and you also have no pets). All of these are on 30 bazillion bus lines and just a few stops from the Pentagon or Pentagon City metros.

If you can spent a bit more and want to be closer check out River House. If you want to be closer, updated, and don’t mind stretching the 1 bedroom cost check out The Buchanan. Their elevators and water go out a lot and the gym is small which is why they’re so far down the list. I really struggled between them and the Wellington and ultimately chose the Well.

I’m at Dominion Plaza (1200 S Courthouse) and pay within your budget for a 1 bedroom. All of the apartments are updated as of a few years ago. Rent is going up and the property management did just turn over recently and so far I haven’t been too happy with them. They will be charging for parking in the next few months too which sucks. Overall though it’s been a good experience. Lots of bus lines, but ultimately still difficult to get to the metro. However there are plenty of scooters/electric bikes getting set up within a block or two…if that’s your thing! I also checked out the Wellington when looking and was impressed, but didn’t have a room available on the floor I wanted at the time.

I had a friend at river house and it was nice and her rent wasn’t bad either for a 1 bedroom (a bit more than what I pay) but that was 2 years ago. Nice location though. The apartment itself was “updated” but it also wasn’t old looking either if that makes sense.

river place in rosslyn. they’re also all privately owned so you don’t have to wait for maintenance etc. but they also have a management office and front desk in each building

i pay 1425 for a studio, i believe a friend of mine pays like $1600 for a one bedroom? but they come with a parking spot and sometimes a storage unit. also there’s a huge pool and gym

I was very happy at Avalon at Arlington Square, just a short bus ride up Army Navy Drive to the Pentagon City metro.

There are a few studios in that price point in that area. I don't think you'll have a hard time, especially this time of year.

RiverHouse in Arlington is the best deal in the Pentagon City/Crystal City area IMO.

I don’t pay anywhere near $2000. I live in a basement unit. Basements off craifslisd and Facebook. That’s how I’ve found every place I’ve lived since 2008.

Pony up and pay the extra money. You’ll be happier. Cut your discretionary spending to accumulate savings.

You seem to lack patience.

What does patience have to do with being house poor? Patient or impatient I think it’s better to spend money on other things besides housing.

Getting the house you want when the opportunity presents itself may mean you have to suck it up for a while. So you can’t afford that 86 inch TV right now? Aww, too bad.

To me that’s house poor. I would rather have a less glamorous address with the 86 inch tv and nice furniture than the well to do address and no furniture.

That’s my life now. I could afford a more expensive nicer place but then I’m spending all my income on housing. That’s just not how I want to live. No one should have to live like that but many in this super pricy county do just that.

I could probably afford $2000 a month but I ain’t paying that. My address isn’t fancy and my basement is shabby chic at best. I like north Arlington but it ain’t the be all end all. South Arlington is a nice alternative. That’s all.
