They're looking in the direction from where sound is coming from.

Mice are in the walls, the animals hear their nibbles on wood. The mice will come out tonight and visit you in bed.

Might be my imagination… but looking at the bowl on the counter-looks like there’s a rat/mouse/rodent in it. Big grey thing, round pink circles as ears, maybe a pointed-ish muzzle.
