She was named after the (equally spiky) Celtic goddess of war and fate: a being who favoured black and had the ability to shape-shift into diffent forms.

I've not heard of Dragon Age, but I kind of want to look into it now!

Given the backstory you just mentioned, I'm very sure the character morrigan in dragon age was based off the very same goddess

If you’re interested in RPGs they’re solid games. Morrigan is a cool character in the game (and definitely inspired by the goddess, shapeshifting and all). She has black hair and yellow eyes, so I thought the name might’ve been a homage to the character. The goddess is still pretty awesome and the name is still an excellent fit for the cat.
