Gyms are everywhere, so you'd be drawing a more local crowd, those people would also probably be more apt to walking/biking to it. It's a gym after all.

Makerspaces or art centers are a different story.

My idea is more akin to art/makerspace than a gym

i think it would be a huge issue, ive been in the city for over a decade.

its been 7 years or so since i moved from fed hill to hampden. i can say that an activity in sobo feels pretty much off limits due to parking, but i will still go to a friends house it just requires extra planning or effort.

during my own time in fed, friends and acquaintances from other areas of the city would commonly make jokes about how isolated south baltimore residents can be due to not leaving the surrounding area (both out of comfort because you dont need to, and habit due to parking).

Thank you! This is super helpful information, especially coming from someone who may not be within walking/biking distance

glad you found it helpful, i really dont want to be overly negative but just wanted to provide my 2 cents. reading your other comment about it being related to art, i think you would be much better served looking at something more convenient to MICA (which as a bonus will have much better parking options and probably be cheaper than a place on fort ave)

Hmmm that’s a good idea too! I haven’t looked in that area yet. I’ll add it to my list.

My initial thought is that it would be important to have reserved parking, but I was hoping that maybe people in the city are used to the parking situation so they don’t really mind.. I personally would probably be annoyed if it wasn’t within walking distance

that attitude is how most other neighborhoods operate, but in places like sobo / fed and canton, it is more about not having a parking space to return to if you leave.

i don't know the vibe you are looking for with your establishment, but check out bar licorice (no longer open) - was one of the more artsy establishments in the neighborhood and got plenty of suggestions from people but never seemed to get enough business. i wish it was still open because it was a unique spot that also stood out in the area - but from a business standpoint it makes sense considering the neighborhood demographics.

Really depends on exactly where it’s at. Parking availability in that area really varies block by block IMO.

E Fort ave across from Riverside Park

That’s a really tough spot for parking - just a personal anecdote but I was trying to go to a bar over there a month ago and after circling the block 5-6 times I ended up leaving since I couldn’t find parking. I believe a lot of that area is not part of RPP permitting areas so it is fair game for anyone. But it’s mostly residential so very little turnover after 6 pm

That’s super helpful info. Do you remember what time/day you were there and had to circle?

Classes would most likely begin at 6 pm ish so if that’s a bad time for parking it wouldn’t be ideal

Saturday evening, probably around 7.

I used to live in that area and I usually had luck parking close if I got home by 6.

If it’s near metered spots like on light and Charles you should have a lot more luck. Those are all free after 8 pm and are much more available than the spots on fort.

Most sane people who live in that area understand you aren’t going to be right in front of your house every day though

I live in LP and would absolutely be interested in something like this. With that said, I am local and I don’t have kids currently. A bit ‘demand’ for the peninsula is kid friendly activities. If the space was accommodating for kids/families it could do well. As a fellow artist and crafter I would love this :)

What kind of street parking? I'm very unlikely to drive/park anywhere there's RPP or 2hr meters for something like a makerspace or event.

hyperr129 OP t1_j8oveks wrote

This area has open street parking, no permits or meters

No as long as there's something to lock my bike up to!

Ohh! Good idea. I was definitely considering some sort of indoor bike rack
