That’s Fight Blight Bmore. Media really pushes that organization is voice of disenfranchised communities but it’s a lot of talk and not enough good policy.

Great article. Preface- I love Baltimore, love living here and have been here for almost 20 years. I recently received an environmental cit, but didn’t get the first notice.. (No surprise Bmore /USPS). When I was alerted by the following “pay now, or..” notice, there was no info as to what the cit was for, nor could I find a way to figure it out.. Three unanswered email requests to the city site later and I still have no clue why I’ve been cited. With all the bogus “official” mail that comes from scammers, it’s hard to sort out what’s real and what is seems like a scam for many people. Do better, Bmore light Baltimore.

You can check this website for your address, the citation photos should be there. I learned to check my own address often so I don’t miss a citation. I’ve received multiple citations, I never received the notice on time.

Thank you very much for the follow up and this link. Looked up my addy, but is says there is now record of a cit. I will make some calls this week.

You’re welcome. There is a button on the top of the page to choose look up violations (no fine) or look up citations (fine). I missed that at first, it defaults to violations.

You can always call DPW at 410-396-4180 and request for details of the work performed and or pictures.
The office is far from perfect , equitable, or fair.

In my experience, in my neighborhood these fines aren’t for work done by the city. These are fines where the city inspector takes a picture of something he or she wants to be cited, the they send you a fine. Nothing was made better, no grass mowed or fallen fences fixed. This is a fine for the sake of a fine.

This is a good article about environmental citations. The part about black neighborhoods being cited more is important. I believe it’s also important that Violetville/Morrell Park is the most cited “white” neighborhood.
I live in Saint Agnes, right next to Violetville. I noticed for a few years that my neighbors and friends in Violetville complain about the environmental citations more than they did years ago. Multiple friends say they get fined if they complain about the local political group, or complain about the police or elected officials. Last year I filed a formal complaint about a police officer, I received an environmental fine and a parking ticket the next week. The fine was for “tall grass”, the picture online wasn’t my house. I received the fine notice in the mail three months after it was issued so I couldn’t appeal it, I only know the fine was issued the week after I filed the complaint because the notice online was dated.
I believe this is misuse of the environmental citation process. This area used to be beautiful and clean, we had groups of students and young people who did community service sweeping the streets and picking up litter, annual garden contests for the older people, events like that to keep the area nice looking. When I talk to my neighbors about the citations and fines, the people who get the fines are the people with the cleanest looking houses, but they speak out about what seems like corruption. The vacant houses, abandoned buildings, rentals with tenants that change every month and never get cleaned don’t get fined.
This has been a problem for at least three years. I reported it to the Mayor’s office. I don’t know where else to report it. I know this post is an older black woman venting. Does anyone have insight or suggestions?

posting from a throwaway account because I live in Violetville and I don't want to get fined again. I'm not black but I got fined 6 times in 2020 and 2021 after I said something about Village of Violetville ruining the neighborhood. My fines were the same as yours. Tall grass. The pics were the front of my house, the backyard of some other house. I never got a notice in the mail until after it was overdue.

Same here! Tall grass fines and a letter from animal control about a barking dog. We don’t have a dog. My wife got into it with the village of Violetville pos on ND. She’s trying to run the neighborhood like a HOA. Now she’s trying to take over the neighborhood park money from the state. There’s gotta be a way to fix this. The first thing she says when you confront her is that she’s besties with Phylicia Porter so she can do anything she want. Fuck this shit. It’s at the point where my wife panics every trash day because we might get fined again. I’m ready to move out over it.

My neighbor got the barking dog Animal Control letter last year, he doesn’t have a dog either. I believe there has to be a way to fix this, I don’t know what it is. I don’t want to move, this used to be a nice, friendly area.

Why is it always someone else’s responsibility if you get cited? Just take care of your property. Not everything is racist
greemmako t1_j9tgs9b wrote
vague complaining with no solutions. wants money but doesnt want gentrification. wants derelict properties taken from some people but doesnt want them taken from others
so whats the line where I no longer have to take care of my property and can expect someone else to pay for lawn services/repairs? when am i no longer responsible for trash everywhere on my property?
