Walking from Mt. Vernon to Hopkins Medical Campus early in morning

Hi,

I live in Mt. Vernon and work at Hopkins Main Hospital. I have found that I can use the Hopkins shuttle to get to and from work most days, except I also work weekends and need to get to work very early in the morning (before shuttle service begins). Is there any other way for me to get to work using public transportation? Alternatively, how safe would it be for me to walk? This would take about 30 minutes. The area between Mt. Vernon and Hopkins (once you cross east of 83, where that big prison is, seems kind of sketchy to walk through.

I would much rather take the metro or bus…not a walk I’d feel comfortable doing other than in daylight

Wow, how convenient this is. I didn't even think about the metro. If I am interpreting this correctly, to get from the state center to johns hopkins hospital, I could catch a train at the state center at 6:13 AM and arrive at Hopkins by 6:21 AM? That is perfect. Now I just need to see if my employer would cover the cost of my fare.

I came here to say please do not walk- there are better options. Every few days campus security posts about someone getting assaulted along Madison or monument. If you want to cycle - that might be safer but I would head towards the harbor and cut across fells point then head back up Broadway.

Cycling is also an option. You can cross over 83 at Chase or under 83 and center st. You're in a protected bike lane most of the way.

Consider the pink line bus route.. Heads East from the intersection of Charles and Center Streets, then comes back from Hopkins through Charles and Madison Street. I don’t believe Hopkins will reimburse for transit costs.

Subway also works — just depends on what works for you.

I would be really surprised if Hopkins didn't participate in the commuter incentive program through MDOT. Here's the general webpage on MDOT's website: Commuter Choice Maryland

I did Mt. Vernon to the hospital via Monument protected bike lane for a year with no problem, but I never headed out as early as the OP. I did come back sometimes after dark, but usually no later than 8 or 9pm and the biggest issue I had was hitting large debris before I got a stronger headlight.

Not necessarily for everyone, but it is doable!

And indeed I do, quite often. Don’t work at hopkins though, but I use the metro to get around downtown and mount vernon, or to hopkins/north east market and also just because sometimes, I love trains.
