Oh man I must be the only one that loves jury duty. I get paid (by my employer) is probably a big part of it, but I get to watch movies and read or play video games and then go to lunch and have some drinks and come back and cut out early all while experiencing some of the greatest people watching the city has to offer hell yes.

Obviously we need a law that everyone gets paid their full salary for jury duty this shit is insane otherwise.

Are you unemployed? Cause missing out on 8 hours of work to "get paid" 15 dollars (Which doesn't even cover parking) isn't my idea of a good time.

Edited for clarity, but my employer pays me my normal wage which should absolutely be the law.

Okay, that is baller. Yeah, in that case I too would be trying to get jury duty all the time.

His/Her employer pays them for the day. I'm sure they don't care about the $15.

I like it too, is it legal to serve more than once a year?

I believe you can volunteer but I am not sure how often.

Damn. Any chance you can negotiate with them? It is not like you have a choice.

If not, you can always right back to jury duty and tell them you cannot come due to this.

I felt the same way until I was put on a jury. It was a murder and there was video of it. That's why I hate it now.

When this happened to me (received a summons eleven days after jury duty!), I called and they were able to determine that I was on the list twice - once from my driver's license, and once from my voter registration.

This happened to me because the lady misspelled my name when I registered to vote this year so it created a new version of me with 1 different letter

[Related, but not an answer] Here’s a good episode of the ‘Maryland Curiosity Bureau’ podcast (WYPR) on Jury Duty in Baltimore:

Listen, it’s a good ‘splainer. Basically it comes down to a relatively (to # of cases) small city population made smaller by eligibility rules and no-shows, so the courts have to put out more requests to get the required # of jurors.

Verify that it's not a grand jury summons for federal court. That's different from the usual Circuit Court summons.

Just call them with the date you served or write that on the form and it’s fine. A lot of people get in the system multiple times, especially if you have a name difference on like voter rolls and MTA lists, and they should be able to fix it in the system (which is not to say that they actually will).

You can get called again as long as you haven’t served on a jury.

False. You serve a day in the pool or for one trial, regardless how many days that takes, then you’re off the hook for a year.

I’ve had a summons that was to soon. Called the court and they sorted things out.

Edit: clarification one day/one trial

Hm. TIL. I’ve def gone more than once in a year. Shame on me!

I think if you serve on a trial that is long enough (5 days?) you get a 3 year reprieve rather than the usual 1 year

Baltimore City jury duty tips.

  1. Keep your paperwork even after you are done jury duty. They will probably try to make you come back before they are allowed to call you back and you'll need this paperwork to shut that down.
  2. Delay for as long as possible. Keep calling them and have them reschedule it. The longer you can push it out, the longer you can extend the window which they can call you back.

You can wait to postpone until the night before or morning of jury duty. If your number was called, call in and postpone for about 3 months. If your number wasn’t called, congrats!
