Hi, I'm Casey!

I help run some local meetups (Baltimore Code and Coffee, Code for Baltimore, and Baltimore Musical Improv Meetup) and I help run the Baltimore Tech Slack.

At these events I'm always welcoming people who are new to the area, helping get them involved with the local tech scene. And now I finally wrote out all the things I'm always telling people!

I wrote out: a list of local tech meetups, our mega-calendar, tech conferences, joining our Baltimore Tech Slack server etc.

I guess I'm hoping for two things by sharing it here:

  1. Check out the blog post.
  2. Do you know of any local tech events/conferences/etc that I missed? I'd love to add more to this!

Blog post:

🦀 Welcome to the Baltimore Tech Scene — Lots of tech folks here, once you know where to find us!

You're a tech person looking for some community in Baltimore? Come out and join us! I'm always telling people these ~10 things about the Baltimore Tech scene: Slack, meetups, my MEGA calendar of events, conferences and more.

Thanks for posting this! I'm data scientist/ NLP researcher in the process of moving to Bmore. Would love to get involved and (fingers crossed) make some new friends.

There are a lot of NLP folks in the area!

Maybe thanks in part to the university programs around 😄

Are there any coding meetups? I’ve been learning myself, but it would be more helpful working with someone that actually knows what’s going on

Yeah a ton!

One of them is even specifically geared to people learning algorithms if that’s something you’re working on - Syntax R Us

Yup that’s one of the things I’m teaching myself. Any connection to the workshop would be most appreciated!

In addition, there's Equitech Tuesdays that UpSurge hosts. They've been at Guilford Hall lately.

Also worth visiting is: baltimore.tech

ooh I've been to a couple of Equitech Tuesdays!
As far as I know there's no way to invite people publicly, no link or ical feed or anything -- I hope eventually we'll have something like that to point people to!

I really enjoyed the coffee and code that I went to—but I’m really hoping a functional programming group would start up

If you would be down to start one, join us on Baltimore Tech Slack in #meetup-organizers for some support 😄

Are there any groups focused on cybersecurity? Moving there in a few months and I would love to meet some new people.

Let me know how it goes; I do SA / ISSO work down south and am casting an eye to working in the city at some point in the nearish future.

I haven’t seen any myself yet - but I would be surprised if we don’t have one!

It’s also possible there’s an existing one that just hasn’t come out of Covid hibernation yet. Too bad Meetup’s search is so bad 😂

I’d be interested in contributing to some of the Code for Baltimore projects, but looking at GitHub it doesn’t seem like there is a lot of activity recently. Is there still stuff going on?

Hi, I'm not in tech, but I did notice your blog mentioned coworking spaces. I'm fully remote and could use a change of scenery. Can you share some of the good coworking spaces in the city?

I've tried working from coffee shops in my neighborhood but would like to branch out. Also, I don't know if "coworking" specifically refers to space you pay for or if there are free options. Thanks in advance

The two I hear about the most are Co-Balt in Hampden, and Spark which is downtown. People seem to like these two!

The #coworking channel on the Slack is specifically meeting up in coffee shops and libraries etc, not these paid ones

Not a developer, but definitely in the Baltimore tech orbit. There's also incubators as well with ETC in East Baltimore, and Betamore in Port Covington.

For more cost-free options, there's always folks working in Whitehall Mill with plenty of parking and space to hang out.

I'll leave to your judgement if weekly hackerspace Open Hacks could be considered "tech events" - if so, please feel free to include Baltimore Node – and here's a more specific list of our Events - thanks and feel free to let me know any questions (also might be possible to host other tech events at our space, if interested - keeping in mind it would be a group decision - so I can't personally myself commit to anything - but again feel free to inquire if interested)
