Any recommendations for day hikes? Preferably within an hour or so of the city. Bonus points for proximity to a good brewery for post-hike libations.

While you're in Harper's Ferry check out Harpers Ferry Brewing - the beers were good and they had a bunch of food trucks and live music last time I was there

Does a train still get you out there from the city?

From DC, but not baltimore. That's the brunswick line (technically amtrak goes there too, but also only from DC)

Patapsco State Park in Elkridge, Guinness Brewery afterwards.

This cannot be overstated! Patapsco is amazing, so many great 2-4 hour hikes. I typically use AllTrails.
archenemy_43 t1_iuj1b69 wrote
This is the correct answer. Depending on where you live in the city, then it is like a 20-30 min drive, and like stated above Guinness is less than 1/4 mile from one of the main entrances to this park.
wesoloski t1_iujhqkt wrote
If heading back to the city afterwards, Heavy Seas is 2 miles past Guinness towards the city.

Way less fun and less delicious than Guinness brewery though. Used to work there years ago - never worked anywhere else that had such universally miserable employees

Rockburn Landing is also a great trailhead going into Patapsco

Park at the Woodstock Inn and you have trails in both directions on both sides of the Patapsco River, with a beer and a good burger waiting when you get back to your car. It's only about 15 minutes from the beltway and you have over 100 miles of trails to choose from. You can walk from there up to Liberty Dam or all the way down to old Ellicott City.

It’s a little more than an hour, but Catoctin park has great hiking. You can stop in Frederick afterwards for food and drinks.

Soldiers Delight, then Farmacy Brewing. I'm not a huge fan of their beer. YMMV.
Loch Raven, then Inverness Brewing.
Pretty Boy Reservoir, then Big Truck Brewing. I am a big fan of this beer.

So so many great hikes near Baltimore and now is the perfect time of year, with all the beautiful foliage and temperate weather. Download AllTrails app and filter by length, distance from you etc. There’s hundreds of options.

Plenty of great hiking in Gwynns Falls/Leakin Park - quiet trails in the middle of true old growth. If that’s what you’re looking for, hike the Lazear trail.

There is a brewery right next to it. Can't vouch for the brewery, as I haven't tried it, but your post immediately made this park/brewery combo come to mind: https://www.elderpine.com/home

Billy Goat Trail, Great Falls State Park. Part C I think. Close to DC but the best trail I found in MD. Sugarloaf, Harpers Ferry, and the AT near Annapolis Rocks are also great.

They said within an hour or so of the city, so Great Falls State Park qualifies. I have hiked all over the state and it’s so good it would be a shame to not mention it.
