I am thinking of taking the light rail to get to the convention center for a conference on Thursday. I’ve never taken the light rail before and was curious about other people’s experiences.

  • How safe is it?
  • Is it reliable if I plan to get there by 7/7:30?

I’ve used it a few times a year and have never had any issues. It gets crowded at peak times or during certain events like sporting events

The Light Rail might be the most reliable method of transit to be honest. Where are you planning to board it from? I've taken it countless number of times and never had an issue with time, or safety.

Absolutely not a problem. Used to commute on it daily for like, 5 years.

Are you trying to get to the venue by 7/730 or the lightrail by then? Either way, i used to ride it around that hour from Timonium down to Baltimore street... no issues.

The light rail is very easy to use and very safe.

Get the Transit app for up-to-date times of arrivals, and while you can buy tickets from the kiosks, the CharmPass app lets you buy transit tickets from your phone, which is pretty convenient.

if its running it's fine. emergency maintenance has been more frequent recently, there was an unannounced bus bridge yesterday. check mta's website for service alerts before you go. as far as safety, i've only had 1 incident in 5 years of riding multiple times a week.

i love riding the light rail! i would say both the light rail/subway are the most reliable ways to get around

the light rail is safe, i’ve ridden it both alone and with friends and never had any issues. if you want to get there by 7, leave around 6 just in case there is a delay.

I use it several times a month, and haven't had an issue (thankfully) ever.

Occasionally, while commuting north, they stop for a bit to switch out drivers by the North Avenue stop which can cause a brief delay, but it's nothing awful.

Definitely download the Transit app to find out when the next trains are coming. Saves me a lot of time and headache.

-Perfectly fine from a safety standpoint especially at that time of day

-Relatively reliable but definitely download the app

Used to use it daily for work, now I ride it a couple times a month.

Are you coming from north or south? If north my advice would be to park at Timonium Fairgrounds, if South then North Linthicum. Both have ample free parking and are right off the highway.

Might see a few weirdos and be sketched out but its safe. Just mind ya business

Being on the lightrail itself is safe. However I'm not sure how safe all of the stations/stops are. In terms of reliability, it's a gamble. I've been riding it regularly and when it works, it's great! But there are too many times where something causes the lightrail not to show up on time, and the transit app doesn't always provide a description on why the lightrail is late or how long the delay is. I have also had times where it gives inaccurate data.

However, if you are going in the morning and your station stop is beyond N. Linthicum (you're not going to BWI or Cromwell, which are the final stops southbound), you should be fine. The odds of a lightrail breaking down aren't as high in the early morning. It's the evening ones where things can get iffy in terms of being on schedule

Like with anything, keep your head on a swivel and take nothing for granted. I've never had issues but my sister was mugged at gun point, pistol whipped, at the Cold Spring station in the 90s.
