Going to be moving to Baltimore this January to start a job at UMB. Going to be living in student apartments and besides the usual city safety, is there anything else I should be aware of? Places to avoid, etc?

UMB isn't the nicest or roughest part of the city. MLK kinda divides it from the "west" side of the city, which is generally rougher (sowebo/pigtown are on the come up though).

Mt Vernon to the north, and downtown/fells to the east or fed hill to the south are all fairly safe nightlife and walking areas.

Some people think the market is dangerous but I have been there dozens if not hundreds of times and have never been so much as hassled (I am mildly tall white man for reference). Only area around there I would avoid at night is McCulloh Homes, but I am not super familiar with it so maybe others have a better sense.

For what it's worth I don't think the Market itself is sketchy, but half a block up and one over on W Lexington it gets real interesting real fast.

You see a lot of people doing drugs by the market, but none of them are gonna bug anyone. Mind your own business and you'll be fine basically.

Nothing outside of normal. Just be alert and aware of your surroundings. Standard advice for any major city.

This.

Get off of your cell phone when you're walking, pay attention to where you are.

If you're working on their campus, they have a campus escort they will take you from your building to your parking garage/apartment if you feel it's necessary.

Welcome to the City, u/whatugonnadowhenthey ! Come into the City with a positive outlook and you'll love it here.

Stick to the area directly around the UMB hospital campus. It’s ok if you walk south towards Camden yards, but go in any other direction and it gets sketchy pretty fast. Would not advise going north to Lexington market area

I am surprised the UMB admin has not dug caves between the buildings as Peabody and other schools have done. Most are in snow areas of the country, so it makes more sense.

Not super familiar with the whole school but the area right around UMMC can be pretty rough. Anybody that regularly goes there either has no other option or is really confident. It has similar street rules to a third world country.

I feel like this is untrue, especially judging from the rest of the comments here
