My mom has been asking me about good bakeries to grab a nice sourdough loaf or any kind of fresh bread... While I know of Motzi, and a few Italian bakeries in little Italy that do mostly deserts I'm at a loss for a French style spot. I'd love to find a bakery that does some good croissants and fresh bread. What are my options?

Sadly bakeries are becoming fewer and fewer. Too much work for people today. Every time I go to Woodlea, every one , workers and customers are excited and chattering. Esp us old men.
Ovenbird for the sourdough and fresh bread, cafe dear leon for the croissants.
Poupons on Baltimore and Charles is a traditional French bakery

Cafe Poupon is there sister store, and has much nicer service. More bread focused I believed, vs more pastry focused.

A lot of others have suggested ovenbird, and for loaves I think that's an awesome recommendation. Great english muffins there too.
For croissants Maillard and Bramble are tops.
Then you, my friend, are in for a treat! Their baguettes are divine and don’t sleep on the ham and cheese croissant!
One on Baltimore is just for pickup, the spot on Charles is a cafe.
Shh. It’s already hard enough to get a croissant at MP before they sell out.
Call Marta Fine Foods on e pratt st. They use a local and the bread is the best I have ever had
I don’t know about fresh bread, but Cafe Dear Leon has some of the best pastries I’ve had in Baltimore!
I agree. I don’t know what their current situation is, but it might be worth checking this out before heading to Sacre Sucre.
I also suggest ovenbird sourdough!

Patisserie Poupon on East Baltimore (next to the Shot Tower) for croissants and pastries, the Wine Source for baguettes, sourdough boules.

The Wine Source in Hampden carries lovely baguettes and boules (round loaves of crusty bread) as well as some pastries on weekend mornings. I'm not sure who bakes them but they're always fresh and amazing.

I always get a couple dozen of their little turnovers. I hate the drive from Mt V, but its worth the effort.
It’s definitely a commute over there, which is probably good so I don’t go too often!
I love Patisserie Poupon for pastries and sweeter breads! They have my favorite croissant in the whole city. With just the right amount of flakey exterior and buttery, layered interior, but you don't lose out on the bread flavor coming through. I also highly recommend their fruit tarts, cookies, walnut or raisin danish, or any of the savory danish with cheese!
I pick up goods from their location on N Charles St, Cafe Poupon, but their main pastries are baked on the Baltimore Street location and brought over, fresh, each day! (website is closed for the holiday 12/24/22 - 12/25/2022, but the Baltimore Street location is OPEN today until 5PM!)
My good friends that grew up surrounded by bakeries in NYC love Ovenbird Bakery. They have lots of gorgeous bread displayed. I've only tried their muffins (heavenly), cookies (wonderful), and danish (divine), though!
Pitango Bakery & Cafe in Fell's Point has GREAT focaccia if you can't make your own this busy and chilly season!
