go out in mt vernon, station north, etc. reminds me of parts of brooklyn but without as much congestion. baltimore as a whole reminds me of what my family says nyc was like in the 70s though, and it's a vibe i like a lot. also i'm somehow less scared of dying when i do city biking here!

for sure! if you haven't been, catch a show or two at the crown and get a drink at club charles, that always feels like familiar territory for me (but i was a big fan of the BK diy scene, so ymmv!)

honestly nothing compares. when I get homesick I go visit relatives or friends in NY/NJ. I appreciate baltimore for what its good at (more lowkey unpretentious vibes + its own kind of cuisine), not for what it could imitate about other places. if you want bootleg NYC go to chicago

really wish we had more fuckin trains though

I get Baltimore ice cream from Bmore Licks or Taharka, both of which are better than anything I ate in New York.

I live in Fed and it’s very much like Brooklyn which I moved from. You don’t have to drive from this part of the city to most places but it’s less convenient than the subway. The food scene is very pub snack and seafood focused- you’re just not gonna get the variety like New York. Even Dc has a pretty lackluster food scene, it’s much more expensive to eat out here and quality isn’t always worth the price. One thing that helps is following all the local magazines, newspapers and blogs- there are so many events that come and go that I’d never know about without the blogs. Baltimore mag, baltimore fishbowl, baltimore banner, sobo post to name a few.

I’m in the opposite situation, moved back to NYC for the 5th time back in 2018 from Baltimore. One thing I’ve always loved about NYC is the quality of the museums and art in general. If you’re into that hit Walters, Peabody Library, Visionary Art Museum. BSO is great also if you’re into that.

Because it is.

Seasons? 🤮 Ledos ? 🤮

The closest I have gotten to an actual NYC slice is Ribaldi's. And it still does not taste right. People say Angeli's and Angeli's isn't right either. When I want delicious I give up on NYC slices and just get Noona's and call it a day. Noona's isn't a NYC slice, but it is delicious.

If you’re looking for a New York slice the Sbarro in Marley Station Mall is still open.

Vito's in the county is decent nu style pizza (there's 2 or 3 around Owings Mills).

The slices they sell are more ny style than if you order a whole pie fyi. Not sure why, but ordering a slice or two there is better than a whole pizza.

I also recently tried noonas and their pizza was pretty solid as well, and not thick.

Try Pizza di Joey, Pasta Mista, Remo's of NY, and Paulie Gee's....and Vinny's Cafe for a mega slice.

As someone who grew up in NYC and moved to Baltimore recently. Step one, is to stop the mindset of "looking for NYC". Works for travel too. You wont get the pizza here, you wont get the bagels. Im a bodega Kaiser Roll breakfast guy, you wont get that here. I dont think ive seen a dirty water dog since ive been to Baltimore. When i miss nyc, i go back. If you plan on living in Baltimore for a long period of time, find what you like best about Baltimore. Overall, ive been more then happy with my move and look forward to staying.

I’m a Baltimore native but my octogenarian parents still live here, and I keep having to come back and help so I’m trying to base myself out of here and get rid of my outrageously expensive New York apartment. This will sound incredibly snotty, but I grew up in Homeland and Guilford, and about 15 years ago, my parents moved to Timonium…which I HATE. I love the old quirky neighborhoods of NYC and being able to walk to whatever I need, and I used to have that ability in my old neighborhood. You know of course that NYC is the capital of being able to get anything and anywhere you want at anytime, and I know exactly how you feel. The only thing I can think of that’s remotely comparable is Fell’s Point and South Street Seaport.

You could try pizza Johns, very homey place to eat Italian food, pretty good pizza and really good cheesesteaks

Moved back to Baltimore a year ago after being in NYC for 5 years.

I hate to not answer your question, but here’s a suggestion: try to enjoy things that are unique to Baltimore that you can’t really do/get in NYC. If you’re trying to do things you loved in NYC, you’ll be disappointed since you can get the subway, good pizza, bagels etc. anywhere else tbqh lol.

Try to enjoy the seafood, cheap drinks, chatting with and actually knowing your neighbors, ease of travel to nearby hikes/actual nature, restaurants/venues/art spaces with actual diversity of class, the easygoing slower pace of life lol. Stuff like that.

Luckily for me, I still know people in NYC, so I can go back and eat some awesome pizza and bagels and pay $20 for a cocktail haha.

Hope this helped :)

Yep, moved here from Manhattan in April and am very happy with the change (not to mention, the rent!) :D

We live downtown, and it’s much easier to walk places. I take my car out maybe once a week, more often in the spring/summer to take my dogs on hikes outside the city. But yeah, definitely doesn’t compare (at all) to public transportation in NYC.

My husband and I just moved here from nyc and it still feels quite foreign here. affordability is a huge thing but we can’t quite get used to how happy everyone seems and people saying hi to us on the street 😵‍💫 so far we like movies at the Charles and just found a nyc style deli (Attman’s) that looks promising. Good luck to ya!

My ex is from Brooklyn (East New York). She would always express how certain sections of Baltimore reminded her of BK right down the names of street signs.
