Sallyport. Very common, can see them in Fells, Canton, Fed Hill to name a few places that have them pretty much every block.

I'm a native and have never heard "sallyport". How is that possible?

Hundreds of years of designs all over the city, so it's unsurprising to not know it all... Especially if they aren't in the homes in your neighborhood.

Yeah, I’m a little perplexed by this also. Sally way is more common

My neighboring house has a sally port, as we are in the center of a long block. It is not the usual sallyport as once you pass through the arched opening it widens a couple feet. There is a door on the side of the building and the sally-port allows one to access the 2nd floor and go to the back yard. Started life as a 6 room 3story row house turned into a bakery. When I first moved in about 4 young guys were renting the house. They threw wild parties. After one of these wild gatherings it seems that one of the roomies, who was home alone died due to too much fun, but he was stuck in the Sallyport, between the next person's wall and the 2nd floor staircase. Not sure how the fire department got the body out. The body had been there through the weekend.

Do you live in Canton? Sounds like you're talking about the house we lived in on South Clinton. We had a sally port.

The city is trash cans are too wide for most Sally ports

You’d think someone would have pointed that out before they ordered 100,000 of them

it's almost as if they were built before widescale trash pickup was a common thing... 🤔

DiscoDeadhead t1_j0amgft wrote

But you would think someone at the city would’ve been knowledgeable enough to know how narrow they are so people don’t have to leave the cans in front of their homes 24/7

Sally ports are the holding areas between door openings when you walk into a jail. One door opens, you walk forward. That door closes. You’re closed in the Sally port. Then a different door ahead of you opens and you can then go forward. The port is a holding area to prevent anyone from walking through the door and out of the jail. I always heard breezeway was the term for this in the row houses.

The city of Baltimore should have trash cans to fit in the Sallyports. It would clean up the city a bit!
