Good morning,

I recently became aware of bus lane restrictions for automobiles. A right turn on a segment of bus lane that has alternating red and asphalt-colored segments is allowed. However, there are certain alleyways and garages that require entering a bus lane to access them. I was wondering what the law says about these circumstances. If should they require alternating red and asphalt-colored segments, how would one advocate for this change? Thank you.

Yeah, because you’re the same dude who got a ticket for using a bus lane as a pickup zone. You fucked around and found out.

You enter a bus lane for several seconds to make a turn into an alleyway or garage; you don’t idle waiting for passengers. So there’s no change for which to advocate.

You stopped in a bus lane to pick people up. That's not the same scenario as turning into a garage or alley.

The bus lane should be treated similarly to a light rail track.

If you’re trying to get in the garage, wait outside of the bus lane (in the street) until it’s clear, and try to be in the bus lane as little as possible.

The same thing for coming out, don’t wait in the bus lane.

The reason for this is that busses are super long, and if you’re blocking it, the bus could then be blocking much more traffic behind it.

Also; these bus lanes are used for emergency and maintenance vehicles, so it’s extremely important to keep the clear.

Stopping to pick people up as a taxi does not mean you use a bus lane dude.

If it is solid red, you turn across it instead of entering it. Same thing you do for a separated bike lane in those instances. The dashed red at intersections is just to allow better turn queuing for cars where traffic is higher. It's honestly a shit design meant to make drivers happy and probably should be done away with as drivers still aren't happy. Just stay out of the bus lane, it isn't hard.

I was thinking about this but there is no real good way to have carbrains do right turns across bus / bike lanes that act as straight thrus that works well. They never check their right to yield to thru traffic.
