Just what the title sounds like! I’m starting to toy with planning a birthday party with about 20 people. I feel like that’s way too many people for a sit-down restaurant, especially since not everyone will know each other. Has anyone rented out a section or full bar in Baltimore before? Would love something with a small rental fee (or none if possible!), a designated area (doesn’t have to be a totally private room), & where everyone can go up & put stuff on their own tabs, eat/drink what they want, etc.

Waverly Brewing moved to an events/private party model. I think the rental fee is basically just an order minimum.

I also think Blue Pit facilitates private parties.

Peabody Heights Brewery does this. Plus, they have an arcade room!

I second Peabody Heights. Had my most recent birthday party there and ordered outside food for guests. It was a great venue for it, great beer, and the staff are awesome to work with

Mahaffey’s has an upper level we rented out for my husband’s birthday. They’ll cater too.

Came here to say this. I’ve hosted and attended many parties here and they’re great to work with.

Breweries are often helpful and accommodating, though food and hours can be limited.

Just did an event like this in the back (out door section) of Dutch courage. They were incredibly accommodating. The person who set up the party opted for charcuterie and a punch bowl. The charcuterie was surprisingly impressive and the punch bowl actually lasted quite a while. We had dedicated servers the whole night. They even refrigerated a cake and provided utensils for it! Really awesome experience.

I know Little Havana rents out one of their back rooms (which has a bar) for birthdays because I went to one but I have no idea how much they charge

Cross Street Public House has an upstairs. It's a cheap rental. they can do seperate tabs for all your guests, or you can do one tab depending on what kind of party you are throwing. Pizza and food is pretty good too. Just went to a party there and it was great, several of my neighbors are now planning on having events there.

We did a welcome night for our wedding weekend at R House and it actually worked out great - got there early and scoped out the corner section with the couches near the bar. No rental fee, everyone could have their own tab, people can eat if they want or they don’t have to, there’s games, indoor/outdoor space, and lots of areas to mingle and interact. I thought it worked especially well for a big group where a lot of people don’t know each other.

Along with the other suggestions, upstairs at Rowhouse and Riverside Taphouse (both in Fed Hill/Sobo) will do private party events. Usually there's a minimum spend that you have to meet, but with 20 people eating/drinking that shouldn't be an issue. Otherwise it's just like having your own private bar. Food at both places is great too!

I’ve been to events upstairs at chasseur in Highlandtown, and Alexander’s and Koopers in Fells. Not sure about fees

Many, many bars in the city have upstairs areas that you can use for events. Would be helpful to narrow this down to a specific neighborhood or type of place you’re looking for.
