Do you have experience, are you a journalist or trying to write a novel or what? Writing is a bit of a vague description.

Hi! No, I don’t have any experience outside of magazine “staff writer” internships when I was studying in college. My degree is in English. I know it’s vague but I’m just looking for any writing opportunity. Within the state of Maryland but ideally the Baltimore area.

What. Kind. Of. Writing. Do. You. Do?

Are you a recent English major grad looking to get started in novel writing? Have you been watching the wire and wondering if any people from Baltimore helped write that television? Do you dream of going out to Hollywood and doing the big new screenplay that gets you an Oscar? There are dozens if not hundreds of little subfields for the concept of writing.

It's like asking if there any opportunities to cook. What do you cook? Are you a pizza chef, have you been making sushi your whole life, are you a grill master?

You got to give us something here, dude.

look for corporate copywriting jobs. kinda why I stepped away from my English major is, despite my enjoyment of language and linguistics, job prospects were less ideal for the sorta life I wanted to live. but copywriting for businesses, editing/proofreading memos and website or maybe even marketing copy, all of these are skills that pretty much any large business could utilize.

You could try public relations/affairs and communications offices. Baltimore and DC both are within commuting distance of many nonprofits, government offices and contractors, professional organizations and associations. Most have a comms office.

There are tons of technical writing jobs for all kinds of things around here. Not sure how good they are but it was something I noticed when I was job hunting recently.

Technical writing is good and there are remote jobs you could do from anywhere. You could even do contract work to get experience.

I love the irony of OP being a writer, but giving us no written information..

Blogs are always looking for submissions, sometimes paid, sometimes not. Do you have samples of your work? Do you write about certain topics? Can you start your own blog to start building an audience?

There are a lot of opportunities in both the public and private sector. Federal/State governments label it different depending on the function but searching "Writer Editor" could be enlightening. Depending on what they are looking for it will be labeled differently, anything from Technical Writer Editor to Instructional Design to Communications Analyst.

Nonprofits in the area frequently hire grant writers, though they may typically want some experience in grant writing. Definitely an option to consider (a lot of those jobs will be under development departments, which isn't the most obvious language for labeling that type of department from a lay perspective).
