Long story short, I am on my final month in my place. I am renting a basement from some private person. I paid for the final month already. We had a argument earlier, and today right now he sent a guy out to change the front door locks to a new electronic keypad. He did not tell me this was happening/ I doubt he will give me the code. What are my options here? There is only like 14 days left but....yea

edit- got the code! man that was a LOT of anxiety

edit- my temp solution is to leave and when coming back there is a window in the basement. i guess i can just climb back in.......?????

edit- thank you everyone for the input! love this community. you are alll invited to my new place when i move

You paid for it, he needs to give you the code.

The house next to mine is rented. The dude owns 6 rental properties and changed all his doors recently to the keypads because he was tired of changing locks and dealing with people losing their keys. I'm not saying you are in the clear, but there is a rational reason for this.

I'd call him to get the code. You had an argument, but you are both adults. You stay for what you paid for.

he didnt reply to my texts and hes not really acting like an adult but lets see what happens

Well if he doesn't respond soon - like today - he may have a problem because that would be an illegal lockout

This is the answer. Be the adult in the situation and politely but firmly emphasize that you require the code by EOD. Email (for better documentation) in addition to text May be warranted.

oh man: A landlord who violates these laws is guilty of a misdemeanor.  On conviction, a guilty landlord could be fined up to $100.

not really worth it....ugh

It means you can call the cops to help you get in your place instead of climbing in the window and risk talking to the cops anyway because your neighbor decided it was "suspicious activity"

That's an illegal lockout. You might be able to get some legal help here: https://dhcd.baltimorecity.gov/legal-resources-renters-baltimore-city

This is good advice, but yes overall I would go with your gut and leave your window unlocked so you can at least get back into your belongings! good luck

Agree with what everyone else is saying re: illegal lockout but also GET EVERYTHING IN WRITING. Save those texts and emails.
