As someone who read the books as a kid and read them again during the pandemic, the answer is no.

Hi friend! I watched the movies as they came out and finally decided to take the plunge and read the books in November of 2021.

YMMV, but for me, I didn’t lose any of the love for the movies. The nostalgia tied to them is unbeatable, and I would say my love for them even grew after reading the books. I’m not super deep in the fandom so I’m not very familiar with fan theories or opinions, but I thought the movies mostly held up to the books. Some of the depictions were not entirely accurate — Hermione was more of a tough broad in the books — but it didn’t make me like them less.

Hope that helps and wishing you well in your reading journey! Have courage!

Thank you so much for your reply! That’s my main concern - losing the love for the movies if they really are that different from the books😂 I’ve been noodling on it for a while now, so it’s great to hear from someone else who has watched the movies first!

No one should give you actual hate that you haven't read something. Teasing sure but not actual hate.

I didn't read the books till about the fifth movie was out? My uncle gave me the last book for my birthday so I got the others and read them. I like the movies, they aren't like a confort thing for me but I still like them and have all on DVD.

It honestly depends on how nit-picky you are on adaptions. If you focus on the tiniest thing it might change your opinion on them, then yeah I'd recommend not reading if you love the movies. But if you're more laid back and don't mind some deviations, some are pretty major, not enough to change the story but enough that it would have been cool if they could have kept.

Thank you for your answer! I wouldn’t say I’m usually picky about the littlest things..that being said, I don’t know about this particular topic😂
