Welcome readers,

Have you ever wanted to ask something but you didn't feel like it deserved its own post but it isn't covered by one of our other scheduled posts? Allow us to introduce you to our new Simple Questions thread! Twice a week, every Tuesday and Saturday, a new Simple Questions thread will be posted for you to ask anything you'd like. And please look for other questions in this thread that you could also answer! A reminder that this is not the thread to ask for book recommendations. All book recommendations should be asked in /r/suggestmeabook or our Weekly Recommendation Thread.

Thank you and enjoy!

Does anyone else like Presidential biographies?

I've read a few over the last couple of years, and I expect to read more. I think I like this type of biography because it tends to combine broad philosophical themes with American history and weave both into the narrative of a single person's life.

I have not read any book in years due to depression, but I do want to try and read something. I used to read a lot as a kid but now I am easily distracted and very stressed. Could you please give some recommendations or point me out somewhere? Just for the reference, I like sci-fi, drama, and thrillers.

As I've gotten older, I have a hard time staying awake while reading, even in books I am invested in... does anyone else have this issue, or coping strategies to recommend?

I just finished and loved Snow Glass Apples by Neil Gaiman. However, I go to look at the reviews on Goodreads (I know, ew Goodreads and all) and half or so are poor ratings stating the story is grossly portraying child rape and prostitution? Thoughts on that? I was just enamored with seeing the Evil Queen in a different light and the art is gorgeous.

Which publishing company, they may either be a local little publisher of a great company, sells the most beautiful book covers? What is the most beautiful book of the company? From which publisher is your favourite book (cover)?

Mine for example is the edition of Pride and Prejudice from Chiltern publishing

Not sure this is the best place. Apologies if it's not. I'm trying to find higher quality book shelves that can easily be taken apart. About 15 years ago I bought a solid book shelf made of oak and it does not come apart. I'm ready to get rid of it and get something easier to move when I move again next year. Any recommendations?

I'm just wondering why this particular book is so hard to find in hardcover. I was under the impression that this genre didn't have as many readers compared to conventional ones so what gives? Do I need to look in better, more obscure places to find it? I have a paperback en route to me but I'm all about hardcovers first and foremost. Can anyone help me out?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a book club app I can use which has the following criteria:

  1. Add a book to currently reading

  2. Tracks book progress by chapter rather than pages (for example, you finished chapter 4 so you tap chapter 4 for the book on the app)

  3. push notifications to other members of the club when you've finished a chapter. let's say you finished chapter 4 late at night, you update the progress on the app and the members see a notification on their phones when they wake up that says "steffan182 has read Chapter 4"

I'm not sure if anything like it exists as I've been looking online. My next bet is to create a simple app (first learn how to create apps lol) to get this done. If you can recommend something that meets the above criteria, I'd appreciate it -- thanks!

The only two apps/sites that come to mind are Goodreads and Storygraph. Both offer the features you're looking for, but for both, you'll have to find a group to do a book club with. I know Goodreads has actual book clubs you can join, or even create your own. And Storygraph has "buddy reads" which I believe work very similarly to Goodreads' book clubs, but with a much smaller number of people.

Oh, my apologies! I think I read over that part. Yeah, I can't think of any that allows for chapter point. I do know Storygraph is very actively getting new and improved features, so something like that may come eventually... But no guarantees. If you'd like the true book club (but online) feel, then I think your best bet might be to try Goodreads for the time being!

Anybody know where to find "And the World Remained Silent" by Elie Wiesel.

It's the original version of "Night". It was written in Yiddish and never published. I have not had any luck finding it, even untranslated into English so I wanted to see if anyone else had any luck. It seems like it would be very interesting to read and it would be interesting to see the differences between it and Night.

Tablet vs EReader | Asking for advice! I've been reading on my phone since my tablet died years ago, and my ereader surrendered way before that. Now I'm interested in buying a new eReader since there's now a lot of choices compared to years prior. But I'm also wondering if buying options is still limited to its brand?

I primarily used Kobo, Google books and Kindle. I also have apps for manga/manhwa. Is there an eReader that will enable me to have access to all? Or am I dreaming and tablet is still my best choice? In that case, which tablet is best if I'm going to use it primarily for reading? Battery life was a problem and overheating with my ancient galaxy tab.

I need to start organizing my digital library so I can get started on my reading this year! Thanks!

Clarissa abridged and unabridged

I recently found Clarissa by Samuel Richardson a Modern Library edition from 1950.

I want to read it but as I was logging it , to shelf it, I noticed online has it listed as an abridged version. It doesn’t have its dust jacket but inside I don’t see anywhere that confirms or contradicts this.

I would like to know which version this is to know if I’m reading the complete story or not. If anyone knows , it would be very much appreciated help & if more information is needed please let me know. Thanks!

Is there a 1-step way to add/rate/date a book on Goodreads (desktop)?

Goodreads recently changed, and the functionality now seems to be way worse than it used to be.

I used to be able to type in an ISBN and it would pull up the book I wanted, and right there, I could put in my rating of the book and the date that I finished it.

Now I can't figure out how to do this without going to multiple pages, and it's a big hassle to find what I need.

Please help! Thanks.

Can someone spoil White Oleander for me?

I started out really interested in the story and where it was going, but I am really struggling with Astrid and Ray's relationship. As it was happening it was completely romanticized but I figured the author would circle back and show the wrongness of it. So far that hasn't happened and it has made me totally uncomfortable with the book. Does the author address this at any point?

Hello.

I have been searching for a published book of letters between Yasanuri Kawabata and Yukio Mishima, printed in an English translation, and seem to be coming up short.

I have found listings of the book in Spanish, French, and it's native Japanese, but nothing of it's publication in English.

Is anyone aware of any English translation exists, or am I chasing something that doesn't exist?

Worst case scenario, I will buy in Spanish, since my Spanish is better than my Japanese. But I'd prefer it in English, since my English is better than both.
