Why don't you buy books from European retailers over shipping them from the US? Makes no sense.

They don't carry that many American/English language-books. Some can be found in the UK of course, but the shipping is almost as expensive as ordering from the US.

I've seen plenty of sellers on abebooks located in Europe for English titles I wanted. Generally even the shipping to the US isn't that bad.

It depends. I have a little background working at a book store and looked into this issue. For small bookstores, it's really tough because, like you said, it's 20 for shipping one book, which is just a little high, but that's going to be largely the price. I wish it wasn't, but buying from a small book store isn't like buying from a large Corp that can get cheaper freight. It gets even more expensive when it comes to shipping to Germany or France as they require special insurance to dispose of packing material properly.

Thanks, I see what you're saying but shouldn't you at least offer some discount on the shipping if you order a large quantity?

Not really shipping is charged by weight, and books are heavy. At a certain point, it might be considered bulk, and the shipper might offer a discount to the book store, but I doubt you'll see the difference as the buyer pays for shipping before it's purchased. The bookstore I work for doesn't ship outside of the US-Canada because of this.

Try awesomebooks!

I don't use it that often but it's a good site, sometimes you will have to wait for the right discount for a price to drop but it's worth it.

Medimops is located in Germany but ships to other European countries as well. And they have a fixed price for shipping if you order like 5 books or more.

Try Betterworldbooks.com

Also in US shipping books overseas is very expensive. The least expensive choice is USPS and it will be by weight.

Hi there. Your post would be better asked in our Simple Questions thread. It helps us keep the main subreddit focused around broader discussion rather topics which only apply to an individual. Thank you!

where in europe is that? where in europe (that makes a big difference? You are not european yourself to think you do not need to specify country of it EU?)

books in which language, english?

Use bookfinder and put shipping country.

I do not know for how long you have lived where you live in now, but importing, shipping books has been expensive for a long time. Brexit did not help with the acess for english language books. Another alternative is to look at all the european based amazons, including UK (though if you are in the eu or another country with strict customs you might pay custom taxes) and check there for used copies and their shipping prices to your country. Though keep in mind even using amazon ostensibly for EU countries, if the place the seller ships is outside the EU it is liable for customs, though some sellers seem to take care of it.

Sorry, I directed my question at Americans :)

Thank you for opening my eyes to Bookfinder. I see Amazon (De) has a pretty good collection and that should mean no import taxes as well.

Do you know of any specific firms like this?

they might have import taxes, it does not matter where the amazon is, just where the seller is.

for used books, not specifically, but for books in general bookdepository (and if book is not out of print, it will likely be bew less than 5+20 dollars for shipping)

Thanks, I'll take look if the need arises but generally this would be for used books, books still in print can generally be ordered trough Swedish firms.

At these shipping costs it might be cheaper to visit and transport the books myself (once my list of books to buy is long enough). Know of any good physical stores for used books in the UK?

out of curiosity -

what would it cost you to have them sent to your house

and you post it to Europe?

is this an option?
