I was reading James Crumley’s The Last Good Kiss and watching the first season of HBO’s Perry Mason contemporaneously, and Matthew Rhys just kind of became CW Sughrue in the process. Paul Giamatti was once linked to a film adaptation of the character, if that gives you any indication.

Different but similar issue… I read the Harry Potter books before the movies came out, and the name “Hermione” was not at all something I had heard of, so I made my best guess and moved on. I was so mad when the first movie came out because her name was “Her-mee-on” in my head, and they kept messing it up.

I still envision Megan Follows when I think of Anne Shirley even though I loved Anne with an E and thought the role was also perfectly cast

I always felt like Mike Hagerty, who played the super, Mr. Treeger, on Friends would have made a great Ignatius J. Reilly from A Confederacy of Dunces.

Probably would have needed to do this in the late-80s or early-90s.

I've read most of the Reacher books long before Tom Cruise and was stunned when he played the giant. Thankfully, I've got Alan Ritchson to replace him in my envisioning and will always picture him as Reacher.

When I reread the Kenzie and Gennaro series by Dennis Lehane recently I couldn't help seeing Casey Affleck as Patrick Kenzie because of Gone Baby Gone (the movie), even though I had read the original five books before the movie came out.

Vin from Mistborn is Felicity Jones with dyed black hair.

Elend is John Kransinski in a white imperial officers uniform.

When I read The Martian, for whatever reason I pictured Donald Glover as Mark Watley (the nerdy, sarcastic stranded astronaut). And then they cast him in the movie... in a small supporting role.

I always imagined Duncan Idaho as Chris Cornell. The description of Duncan with goat black hair made me think of Cornell. Even though he wasn’t an actor, I think he could of looked the part with a couple of months in the gym.

I always imagine Tom Holland as The Kid from Blood Meridian. Looks too young and harmless from outside, but really good at battering the shit out of you if provoked enough.

I think by the time I got there, I just had it totally stuck in my head the wrong way. Also, it probably didn’t help that I read that whole book in one weekend because the only copy in my house technically “belonged to my brother,” so I had to wait until he went camping.

Bombur from The Hobbit looks just like the Spirit of Christmas Present from Muppet Christmas Carol, just dwarf-sized. Which is less far-fetched than you might think, because SCP shifts size from too large for a room to comfortably in the room, to at one point the size of a mouse.
