The film "Something in the Dirt"?

Not trying to be dumb or condescending, I remember media wrong sometimes. If this is a book I'd be interested since it seems to have some odd overlap with a movie that I don't think is nominally based on any book.

Perhaps "The Dionaea House"?

Not a perfect fit, but maybe 14 by Peter Clines? I remember that being a fun read, so maybe give it a shot even if it’s not the one you’re thinking about.

Not the book you are looking for, but you may also enjoy the bizarre ‘As she climbed across the table’ by Jonathan Lethem, about a wormhole into - possibly - another universe, and a researcher who falls in love with it.

I'm not certain, but the story you're describing sounds similar to "The Black Hole of Carcosa" by E. Hoffmann Price. It was originally published in the pulp magazine Weird Tales in 1931 and has been reprinted in various anthologies. - ChatGPT
