I liked 'Mother Night' by Kurt Vonnegut when I read it a few months ago, but I did have the thought that if it was longer or if there was a longer book with the same/similar plot, it would have been just as interesting.

I know it isn't the point of the book and it would have changed the type of book that it is, because it may have become more of a mystery (like more wondering about Helga's identity for example), or a thriller etc., but still!

How about you?

I loved that book, but I felt like it just ended. I definitely wanted more

The first time I read The Martian I wanted at least an epilogue.

Thankfully the movie gave us that, but I still wanted to read more about his recovery in the Hermes, his return to Earth, and what he did with his life after NASA in the book.

They recently re released it with the addition of "Mark's Journals" at the end. Not worth the repurchase cost. A tiny amount of post wrap up, mostly just prequel color.

Longer- None! One mark of a good book is that it's just as long as it needs to be.

Shorter - ohhhhhhh.... tons.

A lot of Scalsi's one shots, the feel like the sitcom of the literary world.

I can think of a lot of books that need 25-100 more pages to wrap things up instead of leaving them in sequel possibility territory. Like, you know that idea doesn't have another book in it that's going to be as solid as a first, just wrap it up tight and complete the story and give up on the direct sequel.

Gone with the Wind, it’s my favorite book and even though that book was long as hell when I finished it I still wanted more

You know it does have a sequel, Scarlett, but I'm guessing that doesn't really count

I read it but one it wasn’t written by the original author because she got killed shortly after Gone with the Wind became successful. And two it wasn’t very good

I don't think Margaret Mitchell would have written a sequel anyway. And yeah I heard Scarlett wasn't very good that's why I haven't read it. I loved Gone with the Wind too btw!

Pretty much anything by Heinlein. Most of his books are pretty short compared to modern sci-fi. I would love to have seen him stretch his legs with either epic stories or interconnected stories/series. Unfortunately, that was just not his thing.
