How do you carry your books while commuting?
I read while on the train to/from work, but once I finish a book it looks a lot more used compared to a book I've read only at home. I carry it in my backpack which contains only book+laptop, but the wear&tear is excessive.

You can get book sleeves on sites like Etsy, which are just fabric pouches to keep your book in. I have a couple that I use when traveling and they keep the book protected!

I try to keep it in the paper bag I bought it in. I also keep it in its own compartment in my backpack.

Generally in my backpack. Alot of times it gets bent or pages folded on but I just accepted it as a sign of something that has been out and about being read in the world.

I have been working on a book I am writing and have been using various editing software but today my editing program told me to change from freshman to the first year because it was too gender conforming

I had never thought about the word freshman as being gendered but was wondering about your opinions, especially because I want to do the best I can to not upset people if it can be avoided

It seems reasonable that, in world that is more aware of gender biases, words like "freshman" would be made obsolete. I saw that a couple of institutions like Yale and Penn State made policy decisions to remove such language. I also found a reddit thread where teachers were complaining about the "woke liberal agenda" so there are always going to be those who are resistant to change.

When I started college at a small, fairly liberal college in, ahem, 1986, we were first years/first year students. We were hardly the first class called that. It has been around a very long time.

ETA: I don’t know how common it is yet, so the only thing may be that readers may no understand what exactly it means initially. First year students would be what I would use the first time, then you can short hand it to first years. I wouldn’t use first year, because it’s a plural, as is freshmen.

Depends on how you define "worth it" but I've had a kindle for maybe a year now and I really like it. I still buy and read mostly physical books but my kindle has been great for a few things! I bring it when I travel, it's small and light so it doesn't take up half the space in my bag or weigh me down, and it's very handy when I'm sharing a room with someone who wants to sleep so I can't keep the light on. It also makes it easier for me to check out books I otherwise wouldn't have, since you can download samples or get good deals. It sucks way less to DNF a book when you didn't pay 30 dollars on a pretty hardcover copy! I also live in a small country so if I want to read something on release day that isn't right in the middle of the mainstream/insanely popular, the kindle version is my best option!

Do you consider books covers to be an example of literary adaptation?
I am currently on my final year of university and writing my dissertation on intertextuality, and book covers and their role they play in literary adaptation.

So, can book covers be termed as adaptations even though they technically belong to the original source material they are "adapting".
I feel as if it may be a bit of a fatuous question but I am interested in everyone's answers all the same.

I listened to a podcast episode about book publishing and I learned that authors generally have little to no input on the cover. A cover artist is assigned, they draw up some stuff based on their thoughts, and the author can pick their favorite. Because of that process, yes I agree completely that covers are literary adaptations.

I've rediscovered this charming series from powerhouse Patricia C. Wrede and I'm guzzling them with wild abandon. I found the complete set (four books) at Goodwill with different covers than I remember. They're definitely a comfort story. Hello,This question may have been answered before, but I see many of the answers pertain to stacking books horizontally. I currently don't have a shelf to store books (hopefully soon I will), so I am mainly storing my hardcover books (pretty old ones) with sheet protectors horizontally.However, I am not stacking these hardcover books horizontally. I lay them horizontally at different locations around my room. Additionally, I heard if you lay books horizontally, the spine will eventually give way and crumble. People suggest storing books vertically since that will not put as much weight on the spine.Is it fine to lay hardcover books horizontally if I don't stack anything on them? Or is it best to still put these books up vertically? I am mainly looking for a way to keep these books in best condition for longest (they are kind of old).If you read this, thank you. Please let me know what you think.

How to sell small amounts of books online? I had trouble with getting anything I put on Amazon to show up in a search. I have maybe 20 old books, some technical that should sell. I added them to an Amazon account months ago but they never show up, at least not yet.

Looking for a book I gave away long ago. I thought it was titled Medieval Song. It was a collection of poems or songs. Maybe troubadour sings. I recall one about a nightingale. "Tandaradei" ??

Another was about two sisters who wanted to have their way with a traveler. He pretended to be mute so that way he could not tell others what had happened. To test him they dragged a cat with long nails over his back and he said nothing. So they had their way with him. The poem ended with "and tit for tat I'll kill that cat."

DAE hate it when whodunits have 3 sentences on the cover? Something like: an affair. A small town. A terrible family secret.

Usually it's varying combinations of the same few phrases.

Idk why I don't like it? It puts me off.

Book Tracker

Does anyone use any apps or ways to track the books they read?

I feel I read so many books that give me interesting points of view and things I want to remember and look back on but by the time I finish the book most of them I’ve forgotten already. Sometimes I do remember and I’d like to refresh and read it again but can’t ever find where in the book Ive read it.

It’d be great to have an app or some way to track books and ideas as I read. The “Reading List: Book Tracker” app seems promising but does anyone have other ways they do this?

I personally love Goodreads. You can keep track of everything you've read with options for ratings out of 5 stars and leaving a review, which could just be your own comments. I also like it because you can link your Facebook and see what your friends are reading.

Need help for English translation of specific paragraph from 'Buzz Aldrin, what happened to you in all the confusion?' by Johan Harstad

This may be a bit of a random request but maybe someone is kind enough to help me out. In the Dutch translation of this book (around page 400), there's about a full page about dealing with loss, taking time, moving on etc.

The specific texts starts somewhere in the middle of a paragraph along the lines of: "If I would've had the power, I would've turned winds, evoked storms etc. ... and goes on until the paragraph ends with something like "... and you are still there."

I was blown away by this specific text and months after finishing the book still think about it often. Would love to compare it to the English version and I feel like Google Translate just doesn't really do it justice.
