Didn't explain the controversy as much as it highlighted the fraught, identity politics driven narrative that walls off demands for authenticity behind strict race barriers.
And when all else fails to persuade, throw in a paragraph of white oppression politics in the publishing industry.
Not sure about the book, but this is one lazily written and intellectually paralyzed explanation.

I enjoyed the book, but I knew it had been white washed. It wasn't particularly deep, but I thought it was well written.

Hadn't heard any of this controversy before, so I checked out the wiki page and saw a line that was so utterly bizare that I couldn't help but laugh.
"In the same statement, they apologized for using barbed wire decorations at the launch of the book".
The level of tone deafness to think that would be okay is hilarious.

I thought the book was very enjoyable. I honestly don't care about the controversy

I loved it! read it last year. As a foreigner (not hispanic) who always dreamt of moving to the US, I relived the preparation, the journey, the excitement, the first moment on American soil, the first sight of the banner in the wind....it was a gripping story that made me grateful for many things. I don't care that the author is not Mexican, she really captured the feeling

You have to wonder if there was anybody who just stood back and thought “ya know this might not go well”.

From the title of the article, I was under the impression that it was actually going to 'explain' something. Oh well.

I'll admit:
This whole controversy is still a bit "new" to me.
I do think that the whole thing could've been handled better. And the excerpts that people showed me seemed like is was very "Hispanderizing" of the characters.
Ah well. I know some people say it was "overblown" but I can see why people would be upset, even if the news item did gain more traction compared to other stories of its kind.
