Haven't read it ends with us, but I've heard that its about an abusive relationship? How is there a sequel to that?

Ends with us ends with the main character healing from said abusive relationship. Throughout the book there's this whole thing with her first love from teenage years, they meet again accidentally he helps her yada yada and the sequel is about them developing a relationship I'm assuming
