What is an over-hyped book you actually loved?

For me I actually liked Where the Crawdads Sing…but it seems I might be in the minority here haha. I thought Kya’s character was never supposed to be more than she was. I know the twist at the end makes people wonder, “so now what? Are we supposed to forgive her?” But I don’t think so. I don’t think we’re expected to. She handles her life like a creature would even though she publicly assimilated into civilization. It’s all matter-of-fact for her and I think that’s the point. I find that juxtaposition interesting and honestly refreshing in a world where protagonists always seem to develop in complex and meaningful ways.

I deeply love Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller. Read it twice (which I almost never reread books) and still cried at the end even though I knew what would happen.

ACOTAR. I don’t always enjoy YA/NA and the writing won’t knock your socks off, but I think the series has been entertaining. I like the world & characters.

It’s likely the books were built up too much by fans and people were probably disappointed or maybe everyone was just tired of seeing them recommended all the time or resent the Maas-ification of subsequent fantasy novels (a blank of blank and blank)

I am a huge Pratchett fan. I read them all. It has been a minute but American Gods and Good Omens spoke to me.

Only Gaiman wrote American Gods. I’m pretty sure that Good Omens is the only book Pratchett wrote with Gaiman.

If you liked those though, you should read Anansi Boys by Gaiman! It’s a spinoff of American Gods focusing on the son of the spider god and it feels very similar to Good Omens at times!

I'm pleasantly surprised to be enjoying A Court of Thorns and Roses so far. I DNF'd Throne of Glass a few chapters in because I found the heroine insufferable and she loved to talk about how she was this badass assassin but never showed it.

For me, a huge part of why I love ACOTAR so far is that we actually see the heroine being a skilled hunter instead of just talking about how awesome she is at it. We also see some of what's at stake at the beginning because of her family's circumstances and the dynamic that's created for them, we see the heroine struggling (I'm at the part where she reveals that she's illiterate), and learning about the masks was a bit of body horror I thought was kinda neat. I'll have to read more of the book to figure out if I'm going to commit to this series, but so far I like ACOTAR and I wish I'd given it a chance sooner.

I know this is 50/50 with people but it happened one summer! First of all, I love how the protagonist may be a little clueless at times but she always has a positive look on things and keeps on moving forwards. Secondly, I love her sense of humor/cringeworthiness. I rarely laugh in romance books, but this book had me laughing out loud hardcore. Now it's not everyone's cup of tea but I certainly loved it.

I've been enjoying Sanderson's work since he was published but oh boy is the Fandom approaching an insane fever pitch.
