I don't know how they do it but that is the same price to send a package from Detroit to Windsor, literally 3 miles away.

If you're shipping a valuable item, don't cheap out. Get shipping with signature verification of delivery! You will need that verification if they try to scam you out of the money they sent after they receive the book. Also, you want insurance for the full value of the item in case it goes missing. Anything less is penny wise but pound foolish.

Businesses can get better rates for shipping than individuals.

Also, from the USPS web site:

> First-Class Package International Service

>Affordable Lightweight Shipping

>First-Class Package International Service (FCPIS) is an economical way to send lightweight packages to about 180 countries. Packages can weigh up to 4 lbs (64 oz) and contain goods up to $400 in value. Other restrictions may apply based on the destination country. First-Class Package International Service includes Electronic USPS Delivery Confirmation® International (E-USPS DELCON INTL®) when you ship online to select countries, although certain limitations may apply. Prices start at $14.85.

They get cheap shipping prices because they send out stuff in bulk and can get a sweetheart deal to ship with X instead of Y.

$40 to ship international sounds like an amazing price, but as others have said if this book has real value you don't want to skimp on the shipping. If that thing goes missing and you don't have any insurance on it you're out the value of the book.

If you are looking for a good deal you should be shopping around. Check FedEx and UPS, they might have decent prices.

Hi there. Your post would be better asked in our Simple Questions thread. It helps us keep the main subreddit focused around broader discussion rather topics which only apply to an individual. Thank you!
