It's more than just a story of one man's journey from being mentally challenged to genius back to being mentally challenged but the emotional reasoning and developments and eventual downfalls of his emotional state.
The choice of writing it from the main characters perspective through progress reports adds so much to the story that I have never read anything like it before, it's very personal.
I wanted to bawl my eyes out after finishing it.
