They're just on the lockscreen and they don't bother me either.

They don't bother me, and they're strictly book recommendations based on your reading habits. I've even found some new reads through them.

All I see are ads on mine before I unlock it... afterwards, I guess there are ads for other books on the kindle store part. I don't have a problem with it. Maybe they are worse on the new kindle? I'm not sure.

I’m someone who usually pays ad-free for anything bc I hate ads so much but on the kindle it’s a non-issue. It’s only on the lock screen that is used for a second while loading.

Not worth it to pay extra for no ads. I do understand though that often people can get lucky paying nothing by asking customer service.

They don’t bother me at all. Sometimes they’re good recommendations. And I’m cheap anyway.

I love my paperwhite. The ads are only on the Lock Screen and I don’t mind that. I’ve even found a couple good inexpensive reads from them.

okay so to confirm: they don’t pop up randomly when browsing your kindle? they mainly just sit on the lockscreen?

The ads are just on the lock screen and if you go long enough without connecting to WiFi they just won’t appear at all (just a generic “find your next great read on the kindle store” and a nice graphic)

I’ve always had the kindle with ads and it never bothered me, but sometimes the book covers advertised can be a little inappropriate for kids.

Try contacting customer service and asking for them to be removed. My wife did that and they removed them without any pushback or $20 fee.

Are you from US? I think they only do that if you have the US version but you are not living there, therefore most ads will not be applicable to you anyway.

vorvanator t1_j6b43zp wrote

They only appear on the Home Screen or Lock Screen, never while you are reading. Honestly I’ve found good deals on books I wanted to read through the adds, it’s almost a benefit.

Turn WiFi off...ads go away

UnderwoodsNipple t1_j6b0xk2 wrote

It's not a bother honestly but just order the ad version and then when you have it, chat with customer service and ask them to remove. They'll generally do it for free. They might say there's a $20 charge for it but then say it was free anyway. That's how it used to be at least.

If they end up bothering you, I suggest messaging Amazon support to see if they can remove them for you. I have had good luck with that

I don't really notice them. I have a kindle paperwhite and I love it!!! Was worth every dollar I spent on it.

Yeah, I hate them, just on principle firstly and in practice secondly. I removed all that I could remove without soldering it to install root.

Still tempted to do that anyway.

Personally, I read my ebooks on my phone. I prefer the smaller screen size for one handed reading. It's also cheaper because I don't need another device, plus I usually have my phone with me so I always have my books.

One thing that you might want to test is to see if the ads disappear if you turn off wifi. That's how many other ad supported apps work, and it changes the question a bit. There are certain apps that won't even work on my cheap phone if I have wifi on because the ads consume too much processing power.

There are a few select apps that I have paid money for. I've probably bought 6 in the past decade, for something like $2-5 each. That's remarkably cheap, all things considered. I haven't regretted any of them. Sometimes it's worth paying to get rid of the ads if you take that perspective.

The paperwhite only has a screen size of 6.8". It's basically the size of a paperback. Real easy to hold one handed. Battery lasts a hell of a lot longer, and the later versions are water proof, so you can read in the tub/shower/pool/rain. Best part is you don't have to worry about light hitting the screen; that just makes it easier to read instead of having a glare.

I used to read primarily on my phone, until I fooled around with a friends paperwhite. 6 months later bought my own.

I am not saying anything at all negative about the Paperwhite. I have great respect for eReaders. It's simply a different experience using your phone.

I started reading on a 7" tablet. I found that I preferred my small smartphone. Everyone prefers different things. It's good to find out what you prefer. I'm glad you found your device!

With Kindle you have to get Amazon books only. I have a bunch of unread Ebooks on my computer that I can't upload into Kindle. Annoying limitation.

UnderwoodsNipple t1_j6b17j7 wrote

Nah, you can use all kinds of books, depending on the format. You can email them to your Kindle or transfer via USB.

youngjeninspats t1_j6b1cyx wrote

just use Calibre to change the format to .mobi or pdf snd you can read them on Kindle no problem

7

ActonofMAM t1_j6b3swz wrote

Calibre also transfers the books to your Kindle for you if you plug the Kindle to your computer.
