Hello!
I've been trying to navigate through booktube and it has A LOT of Young Adult related content which tends to be more popular.
I was hoping for some suggestions related to non-YA related Booktube channels. These booktubers have a certain sort of aesthetic which was appealing in 2016, but now it seems to oversaturate the platform.
If any of you have favorite booktubers who are more serious please let me know, I've recently been enjoying Steve Donoghue's reviews and his videos are quite interesting and different.
I have nothing against YA booktubers (of course) it's just that I've been watching their videos since 2014 and enjoyed them at that time, all of their channels look exactly the same to me now (haha).
Looking forward to your recommendations
Thank you!

Jack Edwards/Jack in the books! He reads with a more adult/literary bend and particularly likes things that are character driven, books in translation, and reading things his favorite celebrities suggested (gotta have that meme-driven content). Pretty much the only booktuber I watch because I'm also not a big YA reader.

I like bookpilled which is heavily into sci-fi. Shades of orange is also decent as she goes into sci-fi, horror, and horror sci-fi as well as fantasy to some extent. They barely discuss YA especially bookpilled.

  4. The Book Leo (found her recently and she's hilarious)

BooksandLala was going to be my recommendation as well!

For OP, LaLa does lots of themed months or experiments with her reading. Like she recently had a month where she tried to figure out if she liked romance so she had one video where she read books recommended to her by friends, one where she read books her viewers told her she'd hate, one week she used a professional service, etc.

She's just very good at figuring out what she does and does not like about a book, and hearing her explain that really helped me figure that out for myself.

Bookpilled is a little unique with a vintage scifi focus. I don't read his recommendations all the time but it is refreshing.

I feel weird recommending the channel because I think the host sucks… but “Better Than Food”.

I can’t really put my finger on it, but his personality rubs me the wrong way, like if I bumped into him at a bar I know I would dislike him.

Having said all that, he recommends some truly outstanding books. I read many books last year off of his recommendation and discovered books that have changed my life. I doubt I would’ve found some of these recommendations without his channel.

I would just look up a list of what he’s recommended and then read a dust cover summary to see if they sounds interesting to you.

Seconding some of these!

I think Cari can read reads a good mix of YA and adult (more heavily leaning towards adult) and I like the way she formats her channel. She also has such a chill, cozy vibe which I really enjoy.

Uncarley is hit or miss for me, but I think that's just because we have wildly differing tastes - the chaotic energy she has is pretty fun. She's definitely worth a try if you're looking for non-YA content.

Since you already watch Steve Donoghue, I'd just pay attention to the other channels he interacts with and branch out from there. They'll often comment and he'll mention them in his videos as well.

There's a bunch of decent ones, the two that have stuck with me throughout the years are the Bookchemist and Better Than Food Book Reviews.

Leaf by Leaf reviews a lot of obscure book. R. C. Waldun isn't great too although his channel is not solely for book reviews. My latest favorite booktuber is Man Carrying Thing.

I don’t think anyones mentioned Ana Wallace Johnson yet and she is FABULOUS. Funny and reads interesting, not necessarily trendy books.

I also just found Shawn McComb and he is definitely my daughters age but he is funny as hell and reads a lot of classic and modern fiction.

Otherwise I watch Emmie, uncarley, Jack Edwards, KDBooks, a sunny book nook, Ariel Bissett, and Ink and Paper Blog.

Jen Campbell. She is an author and has worked in the publishing industry. She talks a lot about disfigurement and disability (she is disfigured [her words] and disabled). She primarily reads adult books in a wide variety of genres.

Yes! I always feel warm and emotional after her videos! I think it has to do with the music she uses. It makes me want to read every book she recommends, even though I know our tastes in literature don’t match 100%!

I really like ReadswithRachel. She is pretty 'harsh' in her book reviews and a lot of people say she is too negative, but I appreciate her honesty. She also reads a lot of fundamentalist Christian work because she grew up fundie and got out and she critiques a lot of what those authors have written and has an inside perspective.

She also has a series called Authors Behaving Badly where she discusses authors who have done or said fucked up stuff and explains what happened.

I also like TheBookLeo. She used to do mostly YA books but she's branched out a lot and is reading more adult literature and classics. She's very chill and is very aesthetic in her filming. She does like a lot of tropes I don't like but she has recommended books I have ended up liking.

I read a lot of genre and the two channels that I can stand are:

Media Death Cult

Mike's Book Reviews

I find book tube to not be worth my time. Not for reviews. From time to time I will watch a vid just to find some new titles but I generally do not pay attention to the reviews. Mostly because it is awash in a sea of YA. Also a lot of the reviews will read the same books and gush over them. I read it and find that it is a boring piece of trash fiction that is a romance novel masquerading as an adventure story.

Mostly SF and Fantasy books, some classics sprinkled here and there.

  • Matt's Fantasy Book Reviews - Fantasy (recent discovery, love his content. he seems very genuine and I like his enthusiasm)
  • Petrik Leo - Fantasy (I got many underrated, more obscure recommendations from him)
  • Media Death Cult - SF (I'm a sucker for his top books videos)
  • BookswithEmilyFox - Mix of everything, mostly SF, Fantasy, a few classics and she also reads a lot of contemporary (I really like her vibe)
  • * e m m i e * - Classics mostly and a mix of others (Cozy vibes)
  • Better Than Food - Classics (A bit pretentious for my taste but I got some great recommendations from him and he can sell you on any book)
  • Kalanadi - SF (Haven't watched her lately but she was reading through the SF Masterworks collection)
  • PeruseProject - Fantasy (previously I think she did a lot of YA, now I see it's mostly Fantasy, or at least the videos I watch from her)
  • Daniel Greene - SF, Fantasy (I don't watch him as much anymore, his content is more centered around news and other media besides books lately. I think he also tries a bit too hard to be funny/entertaining. I do watch his top SF/Fantasy books videos / tier lists)
