Currently on the Green Line being held just outside Boylston. From what I can discern of the driver's cockpit radio, it sounds like there's serious signal issues on most of the line.

And we just pulled into Boylston and it's completely dark. No lights, nothing. Spooky.

Edit 7 minutes later: I'm giving up and I advise anyone else waiting to do the same.

Does this affect buses as well? The 66 straight up didn't send several buses this morning.

2

TheGlassBetweenUs t1_jacrmt7 wrote

Doesn't seem to be, but I'm definitely hearing from friends that buses are also pretty screwed overall. Traffic seems light though

4

magavte_lanata t1_jacss7y wrote

Yeah, traffic was light but the 66 just didn't send inbound buses from about 6:30-7:30am which was shitty. I already walk an extra 0.5 miles to a stop the bus will always stop at because the bus tends to skip the stop closest to where I live, even if there are people there lol.

I'm very glad that my work decided to close our office then, even if the snow isn't that bad.

Power went out at Harvard this morning and took 15 mins for a train to show. The emergency lighting was pretty atmospheric though.

I'm in Sydney right now, and constantly marveling at their ferry system around the city. So easy to use and beautiful trips anywhere you want to get to around the harbor. We could replicate this here of course, but likely never will.

The MBTA used to have a more extensive ferry system around Boston Harbor, but most of the routes were canceled due to high operating costs. All we're left with now is a dinky route to Charlestown, a seasonal route to Eastie, and two routes to Hingham and Hull.

The Eastie route was recently brought back though, right? At least that’s promising. I would like to see the service to Lynn restored too

senatorium t1_jacrqwl wrote

It was, but I'm not sure it's permanent. They published the numbers recently (I wish I could remember where I saw them) and as I recall it cost something like $300K to run and didn't get good ridership.

3

jtet93 t1_jacz68v wrote

I feel like Boston always does this thing where they test something for a few months and go “look no one’s riding it.” But in reality it takes much longer for people’s learned behavior to change when it comes to travel.

8

iliketuurtles t1_jad5l9o wrote

Or they don't pay attention to the other factors. When they kept the T open later, "nobody" rode it because 1) it takes time to change behavior 2) Uber was suuuuuuper cheap then

6

jtet93 t1_jad661u wrote

That was SUCH unfortunate timing. Ubers were like $5 to go anywhere and it was still a new thing, so you could get a ton of free rides by referring friends. That trial was during my prime “going out” years and we did use the late night T occasionally but if you had more than 2 people it was cheaper to Uber lol

5

iliketuurtles t1_jad8geh wrote

Yes - I remember doing the math and it was actually cheaper to uber than to take the T. Now I just want the 3 mile trip to/from the airport to be less than $30-40 lol (The only time I use uber because it's so goddamn expensive now)

Quick question about vehicle inspection stickers. Tried googling this but haven't found anything conclusive. My sticker expires in March 2023, does that mean it expires on the 1st of the month, the end of the month, or the day printed on the sticker that I got it last year?

Guessing it's the end of the month, but I moved to Boston ~a year ago so this is my first time dealing with renewing it.

Anyone else stuck with a child at home because daycares preemptively announced closures last night before it even started snowing? 😓

The storm was massively exaggerated, there's like no snow.

Drunkelves t1_jacihmb wrote

Anyone inside of 128 was only supposed to get 3 inches at most. That just happens to be like 80% of the state population. The 12 people outside 495 look like they got a decent amount.

-CalicoKitty- t1_jacmq2p wrote

I'm outside 495 at the moment. Looks like we only got 2-3" so far, though it's supposed to snow all day.

I finally signed up for the monthly T pass (so it renews itself every month instead of my having to buy at kiosk) and am now gearing up for being super anxious about losing the card for the rest of my life... I have registered it on the T site, but I am a human who loses charlie cards constantly so I'm hoping you savvy people have some creative & efficient methods.

SO

T-takers, how do you stash your T passes so they're a) easy to pull out and tap and b) don't get lost?

PassionPit101 t1_jaea6ox wrote

Not a Boston native (trying to relocate there!) but there is public transport in my city and I have a bus pass. For me I like to slide my pass in a card holder, that I hook onto my bag's key ring! I did the same when I visited Boston last year and took the T.

This one from Muji is great and can hold two cards: https://www.amazon.com/Muji-Soft-Metro-Card-Pass/dp/B00E5YANOK/ref=asc_df_B00E5YANOK/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=167144043525&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=4420826060118171735&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9005169&hvtargid=pla-305497048280&psc=1 You can find it in their physical location on Newbury Street too :)

I've seen a lot of people put it between the back of their phone and their phone case.

HeartrendingExpress t1_jaewaxx wrote

You don't have to take the Charlie Card out of your wallet every time. So the new procedure is just take your wallet and swipe it over the card reader, the antennae will work through your wallet. If you have a bunch of other cards with RFID chips, then they may interfere the chip in the Charlie Card, so remove the unnecessary cards from your wallet.
