Where to get cheap car

Hey guys. Looking for a place to get really cheap but safe car. Could be local garage or small car dealer. Budget around 5k lower the better.

My car has been with shop forever and it only goes longer because of part shortage. Renting for long term is expensive no matter what. Feel getting a cheap car for commute then sell it after will be the cheapest way now.

Regular dealers I used to go only have expensive ones. Facebook market I don’t have a way to guarantee safety of the car. Hope somebody here has good insights

I bought a car on Craigslist like 5 years ago for $250. It was a very crappy Daewoo Lanos that this old guy was the original owner. He was selling it because it was his wife’s car and she passed away. Ran that thing somewhere between 6 months and a year before the brake lines completely went through. Would have cost me well over a grand to fix it so I sold it for scrap for $150. Best $100 I ever spent

For that price, expect issues, unless it’s a hand me down from someone you know. Watch out for “title jumping”, which is RAMPANT here. I don’t remember the last time I found a car in MA from Facebook that the sketchy dude selling it wasn’t title jumping.

It’s waiting for airbag🤦‍♀️ I have been waiting for 3 months. And manufacture just called saying I need to wait at least until summer. I’m on a rental from insurance but only until early March. Trying to talk to insurance and manufacture but gotta get ready for the worst.

Yea I thought about tax. I need it for 5 months could be less could be more depending on how long I need to wait for missing parts. Rental is usually a thousand per month and it’s money thrown away

Why don't you just buy a new car and sell your old one? Cause:

(1) Cost of this car (you say 5(k), (2) plus tax and insurance (let's say 1,000 total, conservative estimate, +tax on sale and the hassle (another 1,000?). That's a good 7k spent, non-recoverable, which coupled with the value of your primary car, may be better to trade in.

(Maybe you recover some of this cars value when you sell, but that's a risky business)

My concern is with my own car’s air bag deployed it won’t worth that much at all. It’s a relative newer car with only 40k. I feel the best way is to drive it for as long as possible just need to figure out this gap time

Hmmm. How much will you be driving per month? There’s a new service from Hyundai called Evolve+ that rents brand new or nearly new Hyundai electric cars for about $800/month including insurance from a Hyundai dealership in Holyoke, MA for a 2022 Ioniq 5 SE. Car I’m looking at one in the app now that has 1,200 miles on it and comes with up to 1,000 miles a month and you can rent it for as short or as long as you need it. Only annoying thing I spot is the $300 initiation fee.

And if you have a place to plug it in either at home or at work it might be the easiest and lowest hassle + safest option vs buying an old and potentially dangerous car.

  1. you could also rent a car on Turo for $800 or $900 per month.

  2. you could buy an affordable car from Carmax and if you don’t like it after 28-29 days (30 day limit) you could return it for a full refund as long as you didn’t drive over 1,500 miles.
