Where to eat near Old State House

Hey there, I'm relatively new to the area, and traveling into the city periodically for a twice-monthly long work day of meetings near the Old State House. I want to make the most of it and escape my two toddlers and my meh suburban dining and get lunch or early dinner on my own while I'm there. BECAUSE WHY THE HELL NOT!

Does anyone have recommendations of places where I can enjoy a meal alone within walking distance in that area? I'm an adventurous eater. Would love anything that's unique and I wouldn't be able to feed my kids because this is for my enjoyment only. Mine!

I appreciate any recommendations, Bostonians!

Falafel King in Downtown Crossing is where I always try to get to when I’m in the city.

This is the correct answer. First time there, I was determined to get lamb. Then they gave me the free falafel in line, and it was all over.

Are you taking the commuter from South or North station. If it’s south st I recommend high st food hall.

Al's. You can get a large sub and have lunch and dinner (or a midnight snack). Or you could be like me, eat the whole thing, and waddle around regretfully for the rest of the workday.

I always love to stop by Chicken and Rice Guys if I'm around that area, fairly cheap halal guys style food. Nothing mind-blowing but it is very filling and I find it quite tasty.

I moved from NYC and worked near the 53rd Street Halal cart which was a must, so this is right up my alley!

I second Chicken and Rice. Some of my co-workers think I'm crazy, but we don't have anything like it where I live, so I like to get it when I'm at work in the city.

That's not far from the Boston Public Market, which has a lot of options (Red's Best has a great fish sandwich, Bon Me makes an excellent sandwich, Union Square donuts for dessert, etc). Nice place to browse before deciding what you want.

Saus is decent for the fried chicken and poutine. You could try north end, a lot of good sit down places. Pauli’s is a fantastic sandwich shop (I really enjoy the Vito sub with some chowder).

I don't frequent steakhouses since I'm able to make a damn good steak just how I like it at home. That's said... Mooo is the fucking truth. That place rocks!! Be prepared to pay $$$$$ though.

Cheaper (but still pricey) and right down the street I would also recommend No. 9 Park. Their cocktails are phenomenal too.

High Street Place a couple blocks away in the Financial District. On High St. European style cafeteria with a bakers dozen of restaurants and bars with a cool atrium in the middle with seating. Also a champaign vending machine

The Bostonian has solid pub food. A bit corporatey, but it's good!

The Night Shift by TD garden is good for a local brewery restaurant.

The seaport has a ton of great casual food options - Aceituna is great gyros! So is Zo's near Al's.
