Al’s Cafe on Main Street in Cambridge. $11 + tax for a bigass “small” sub, a bag of chips, and a drink. $9.50 for just the sandwich. A price increase is coming next month tho.

Skampa in East Cambridge. They used to do hamburger subs on Wednesdays for $4 or $5. This was pre-pandemic so ymmv.

Chacarero in Boston will be my answer forever. It's in downtown crossing, on Arch St.

Chilean beef/chicken sandwiches with avocado, hot sauce, tomato, and green beans. Top 5 bite in Boston. I would do disgusting things for their hot sauce recipe, especially the extra hot.

You can get it "BBQ" style, which just means they add grilled red peppers.

Pre-pandemic it was $11 for a small, $13 for a large.

ABC Pizza in Central, divey Greek pizza style food but if you like that stuff as much as I do it’s great. Subs all start at $9.50.

Cambridge Pizza on the other side of Central, better quality, $12+ for subs.

Cardullo's in Harvard Square top out at $12.99, they are BIG and some serious gourmet shit.

I find most supermarket deli sandwiches are cheapish and goodish, and usually quite large. If you want to just shove a bunch of food down your gullet, grab a chicken salad sub from any supermarket deli.

That bread is unreal too. Sucks to hear prices went up, but it's still on par/a bit cheaper than other lunch options in the area.

A decently sized bowl at Grainmaker would run like $15-17 pre-pandemic.

Falafel King and his prices will continue to reign supreme.

Bob's Italian Market in Medford is also awesome - massive sandwiches though.

If a burger is a sandwich, Tasty Burger is an incredible burger for it's price.

Al's on State Street is good not great. The best value is how quickly they turn a sandwich out.

FoodDy's in Teele Square has massive sandwiches and portions for the price. Incredible fried chicken, jerk chicken, etc sandos.

Livite (Brookline) - best buffalo wrap I’ve had to date

Monica’s - slightly overrated/overpriced. But it’s good. Italians, chicken cutlets etc.

Fígaros - flies under most peoples radar. But sneakily some of the best sandwiches around. Try the Sonny Corleone.

PK Deli in Cambridge. Hole-in-the-wall, gargantuan subs, solid quality (esp. pastrami), approx. $10 and definitely passes the crucial test of: "I can get two meals out of this, but I want to just finish it now and spend the whole afternoon out of commission in a food coma".

Cafe Rustica: Down the street from P&K, not huge, but tasty and decently-sized and in the $10-12 range.

Roust: maybe. Took over the Mt. Auburn Darwin's. Kept a lot of things the same, though TBD if they can hold the candle to the former sandwhich kingpin's quality. The price is also borderline...

I mostly list Roust bc I was a former Darwinian and they are the most logical Successor Sandwich to the fallen great.

Oggi in Harvard Square is quite good. It's mostly take-out, but you can sit down. I personally like their tuna wrap, but they have a huge selection of sandwiches - some of which may or may not be widely available. One day, they had a smoked chicken wrap, which was great.

They have a fairly loyal clientele (I'm one), which probably speaks to the quality and pricing.

If you are willing to stretch your definition of a sandwich to a coxinha (a manioc ball stuffed with chicken and then deep fried), then Oliveira Deli and Market in Brighton off Oak Square has softball size ones for around $5. Get two of those and a cold can of Guaraná Antártida for about $12 total.

They also apparently do some good sandwiches, but I've never gotten anything except the coxinhas due to their deliciousness and being a bit set in my ways.
